06:56 AM ET 07.11 | The clock is ticking for franchised safety Jairus Byrd and the Bills. The two sides have until Monday, July 15 at 4 pm to get a long-term contract extension signed, sealed and delivered to league offices. Based on the latest news and trends, it doesn't appear to be all that likely that Byrd and the Bills reach a conclusion by the beginning of next week. The lingering question, however, is whether or not the free safety is worth the type of money that he is likely asking for. Using advanced statistics, on the field scouting and some of the top salaries in the league, one can start to figure out if Jairus Byrd has a case to be one of the highest paid at his position in the league.

It's too late for him to get much money out on the open market. He'll sign.

Actually a pretty good article.

Yes it was. Safety is an under rated position I think. Rather have great safeties than great LBs. QBs WRsand DBs are where the games are W/L. Pay the man, ordinary players at ordinary salaries are not hard to find.

And - make no mistake - Byrd is way better than "ordinary".

How much are the Bills willing to shell out for him?

I think he is content to sit on his franchise money, right now it appears he is following in the footsteps of Dashon Goldson. The question is; How will Byrd perform in 2013? Goldsons numbers went down in his franchise year (2012), despite that Goldson still demanded a bunch of money so the 49ers let him walk.

As for Byrd signing next year ? I think he will evaluate how well the Bills do in 2013.

The Eagles decline started the day they let Dawkins walk. They lost their brains and their heart. The middle of the field became a WR's paradise.

The Steelers and Ravens defenses were completely different with Polamalu and Reed patrolling that neck of the woods. In today's game... you had better have safeties that cast some level of doubt on a receiver.

They can tag him next year too at 120%. Still worth it. He only has to show up for 6 games to get full year credit, but he is throwing about $10 million away if he does that and two years older and lowering his value in FA.

I would hold him to the tag for two years if I cannot get a deal.

Did not break my heart to see Dawkins go.

I betting Romo and Manning share your sentiment. Id include the last 5 Redskin QBs but up until RG3 Im not sure any of them knew what a safety was.

Sure they knew, it was their leading receiver.

I think the more pertinent question is how much CAN the Bills pay him?

July 12, 2013  04:58 AM ET

I think he's a top 3 safety from what I've seen of him! The guy is AROUND THE BALL every single play... Id LOVE to see him in Big D! He's just a diffrenece maker! If Buffalo don't pay him, teams will line up to do so next year! Maybe they can't afford to after signing that sack machine - #1 pick Super Mario!!! The only thing Super about Williams is his .35 sacks per game! He had like 5 more sacks last year than ME!
