07:10 AM ET 07.11 | Not long on the job, Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague has a new and very expensive vision before him. [Teague] unveiled a $190 million athletic facilities master plan for the University of Minnesota on Wednesday, surprising observers with the size, scope and cost of a project that will affect every university sport. "More than anything, I wanted to show that we're going to be aggressive and be committed to doing the best we can and stretching ourselves all that we can to building something like this," Teague said. "Am I guaranteeing all of this is going to get done in eight years? No. But that's our goal." ... In comparison, TCF Bank Stadium, the Gophers football stadium that opened in 2009 and had a $288.5-million budget, had a fundraising goal of $86 million.

Good thing they can save costs on player salaries, so the football team can support every other sport on campus. Although I am guessing Jerry Kill and Norwood Teague will still be making millions.

I'm sure the Gophers' trip down to play NMSU in Las Cruces 9/7 is gonna help pay that tab.

Payback? Didn't NMSU beat them a few years ago in Minne?

They should be aware of the fiscal problems at UTk before signing up for Teague's vision. Don't fund it with debt.

When is that? (I know. I could just look at the schedules.)

I agree about Hamilton, but I assume the Regents/Trustees/whatervers at UTk running the school approved his plan. Teague may have a great vision for Minnie's athletic department, but make sure it can be paid for before approving it.

Hamilton was such a good fundraiser, the PTB ill-advisedly made him AD and gave him free reign to spend too much money and make horrid firing / hiring decisions. His tenure was brief, but oh-so-damaging. Some of the PTB "retired" along with Hamilton.

I respect Teague's efforts, and although every sports team at Minn. should benefit from a boost in facilities, an upgrade in facilities can only take a football program (the money maker) in a cold weather state with a lack of football talent so far. The potential debt that may rise from taking on such an upgrade is probably not worth it in the long run. Teague's forgotten that Gopher dominance ended in the 60s.
