07:12 AM ET 07.11 | Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting that Penn State quarterback Tyler Ferguson wasn't working out with his teammates in State College, and that he may not return. However, Ferguson's stepfather, David Reese confirmed to Pennlive that while Tyler is currently home in Bakersfield, Calif., the quarterback will be returning to Penn State and still plans to compete for the starting job. "There's no change in his status," Reese said. "It's not 99 percent, 99.9 percent or anything else. He's 100 percent committed. He came home for the 4th of July just because everybody else went home too. "Tyler's mom is going through chemotherapy and he just wanted to come home, see his mom and make sure she's doing okay."

Kid goes home to visit his sick mom and PennLive.com fabricates a intent to transfer story then "investigates" in order to receive clarification. Responsible journalism is dead. Social media SUCKS!

Reporters used to hit the streets and investigate things, leaving few stones unturned. Now they sit around playing with their smart phones, check twitter feeds and parrot what they find whether it's true or not. Like teenagers.

One of the findings of the Freeh report was that Penn State had a football first and only mentallity. It appears that the people/person at PennLive.com still sees all things through the eyes of Penn State's football team.

The 24/7 news cycle killed responsible journalism... It's no longer about getting the facts straight and the story correct. Today it's all about being the first to break the story and the details can be sorted out later...

As others have already said, to be a journalist today, all you need as a smartphone and a Twitter account...

You are correct sir. Unfortunately it is pervasive at just about every school. Some things should be classified as "none of our business".
