Tennessee's D on the rise

07:11 AM ET 07.12 | Two Vols on the Bednarik Award Watch List? Must be a misprint, right? Based on what we saw last season, UT didn't have anybody worthy of a mention. The Vols put up only token resistance in 2012. They couldn't get lined up properly, couldn't cover and couldn't tackle. But the Bednarik list includes Vols linebacker A.J. Johnson and defensive tackle Daniel McCullers. Believe it or not, somebody actually thinks those two bear watching this season. And you know what? They absolutely merit that kind of attention. Johnson was a very good player on a horrible defense last season. At 6-foot-8 and 351 pounds, McCullers can be a disrupter if he makes the adjustment from playing in a three-man front to a four-man front.

Look closely at the thread topping photo... Mm Hm.

I never understood the switch last year. Dooley brought in a new "big-name" defensive coach who immediately implemented a new scheme without taking into account the experience and fit of the personnel on the field. Considering that the offense was actually pretty good last season, this IMHO is the reason they lost as many games as they did which ultimately led to Dooley's demise. He wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway, but may have coached through his contract, so in the long run, this mistake, however painful it was to watch last season, may have been a blessing to Vol fans.

Dooley couldn't hold a staff together. His micro-managing ways chased off good coaches, who checked out after one year to make parallel moves to other programs. Dooley had to hire Sunseri because his two previous DCs were one-and-done-with-him.

I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to the switch in schemes...but I still think last season will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Six foot, eight inches tall and three hundred fifty plus pounds is a mountain of a man. I assume he's a defensive end. The best thing about the award watch lists is it means we are getting closer to the start of the season.

I sure hope so. The Vols just might need that "D" on 9/14.

July 12, 2013  09:07 AM ET

My D is on the rise too.

Every day, a Gump, Domer Homer and a Tenn thread.....unbelievable

I think I more than made up for the comment, of course you, WPS and DS and the others have to go elsewhere to see.

I did. Good work 0-6.

Sure looks that way.

So, ND is located somewhere between Knoxville, TN and Tuscaloosa, AL, right?

Center of the universe.

Well, Sunseri was available and that's what he wanted to install. Also, 3-man fronts were finding some success in CFB.

Last year, he was the middle plug of a 3-man front, often double teamed, sometimes tripple teamed.
