04:34 PM ET 07.12 | After shocking the basketball world and sliding to the New Orleans Pelicans at pick six, before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2013 NBA Draft, Nerlens Noel will wear No. 5 as a reminder of all the teams that passed up on selecting him. Since the legendary Allen Iverson wore Noel's college number, 3, while playing for the Sixers, the rookie big man had to make another choice.

Why not 99 for all the players that are better than he is or will be?

Wouldnt it be 6 teams since the pelicans traded him?

July 13, 2013  03:14 AM ET

It is ridiculous that a player who couldn't stay healthy in his only year at college should consider it his uncontested right to be drafted #1 overall. Be happy that you were a lottery pick, Nerls.

Humble needs to part of his diet during the summer league.

I like that he's going to come into the league with a chip on his shoulder, regardless of whether or not it's justified.

Assuming of course, that he can harness it as motivation and improve his game.

He couldn't have 6. It was Dr. J's number.

Dwight Howard would have asked for #6

This kid played less than a year in college, which is little more than advanced high school ball. Him being the consensus first pick in the draft was a media fabrication.

He's also coming with an iron rod in his legs, splinters on his arm, and a hole in his head.

because 99 wouldn't be high enough and they don't allow triple digits on uniforms

I agree maybe he can turn that into productivity and if he can stay injury free he could be a dam good player in a couple of years

shouldnt he be more worried about gaining about 50 lbs.... bc at 207 he is going to be treated like a little girl down in the paint!!!!
