Mark Sanchez: Geno Smith's Jets West absence 'not a big deal'

09:15 AM ET 07.14 | We learned Thursday that New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith won't attend Mark Sanchez's annual Jets West practice sessions in Mission Viejo, Calif. On Friday, Sanchez clarified that Smith indeed was invited. Smith reportedly is working out in Florida instead. Sanchez told Beisner he is "absolutely" the starting quarterback of the Jets and will continue to be the starter. He clearly has an edge in familiarity with his teammates. Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley, Chris Ivory, Jeff Cumberland and Kellen Winslow Jr. are some of the Jets players who are out in California with Sanchez. "We've had other quarterbacks; this is the first year we haven't had other quarterbacks," Sanchez said. "Greg McElroy's been here before, (Matt) Simms was here last year, Tim Tebow, who you might have heard of, has been here, Mark Brunell has been here, Kevin O'Connell has been here. "If Geno comes or doesn't come, it is not a big deal. I don't hold it against anybody who's not here. Some guys are getting married, some guys are going on vacation, some guys are doing stuff, so it's totally optional. And it's a big sacrifice -- you got to leave your family, you got to leave what you're doing, wherever you're from. So I totally understand, it's not a big deal."

Don't Come Back To LA, Bro.

Too bad for Geno, he is going to miss out on Kellen Winslow's 100 receptions for the year. This is where it was going to take place.

Geno!

However brief your stay in the League might be... There are 2 words that you will learn to put together: Team & Mate.

the first 30 or 40 at least. Yeah I figure he's counting all the ones he makes in practice

If Geno's absence is no big deal then why is Sanchez bringing it up in the first place and siting all the other QBs who've attended????????

Geno is being smart. Distancing himself from the train wreck of the old guard. When the season is over so will be Mark and Rex's time in NY.

I am wondering if anyone is going to keep track of the pics he throws? He threw 3 in mini camp, and the press said he looked greatly improved.

Half right. Not so sure about Rex if the ship takes on too much water. Start overs often start at the top.

A team mate is someone who blocks for you and gives his all on the field, not someone who runs to the cooler to grab you a beer.

When I lived there I was always amazed at the "flatlanders" that would fly into Denver and party like they did at home, then wonder how they got so plastered.

only in denver.....Tom Heckert, left, and Matt Russell, right, out to kill Denver Bronco fans and too damn cheap to call a cab??? ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ??? With two team executives facing drunken driving charges, the Denver Broncos on Tuesday acknowledged a ???disturbing pattern of irresponsible behavior??? that they vowed to clean up.Tom Heckert, the Broncos??? recently hired director of pro personnel, was arrested in Parker on the night of June 11 and charged with driving under the influence and careless driving, according to the Douglas County Sheriff???s Department.Word of his arrest came just one day after Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell apologized for his arrest over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Well, at least they have that QB position thingy figured out.

It's surprising what a six pack of Carlsberg can do on the top of Pikes Peak.

bingo

I don't know...

Being a Rook in the League, couldn't he have benefited from time spent with the other members of his team (esp the Receivers)?

I know everyone wasn't there but I just think Geno is going it about it wrong...

Why would anyone want to be around Sanchez? Seriously, what can anyone learn from him? (Besides the obvious Buttfumble references/jokes).

I'll be the SD QB's stayed away from Ryan Leaf in the off season too...
