10:24 AM ET 07.14 | Justin Morneau and his representatives approached the Twins again in the past week, hoping to discuss a contract extension for the veteran first baseman in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. They were rebuffed, just as they were in the spring. "We asked," Morneau told the Pioneer Press after Saturday's 4-1 win at Yankee Stadium. "(The Twins) said they're not going to do anything about an extension before the trade deadline or anything like that. That's not an option." Twins general manager Terry Ryan, who essentially declared the organization open for trade talks earlier in the day, would not get into the likelihood of an 11th-hour contract extension for Morneau, playing the final season of a six-year, $80 million deal. "I don't think it's very smart for me to get into Morneau's contract," Ryan said. "I'm keeping all options open."

It's the final year of Helton's contract, so it makes sense.

Yep. When he's not missing massive amounts of games due to injury, he's decent.

Morneau needs to get out of Minnesota. Personally, I would love to see him help a team such as Pittsburgh make the playoffs.

Why Gardy is a dam good manager and the twins have a shot at being good in the near future

Just what the Yankees need. Another first baseman who will spend as much time on DL as much as he is in lineup. maybe it would work out that when Texeira would come off of DL as Morneau goes on. and vice versa.

Mets could use morneau at first Ike Davis has had his chances, but has not played up to expectations. Plus Mets have some talent in minors to swing deal with twins. Plus with Morneau it might motivate Davis to work on his stroke to get back to mets.
