Next great USC quarterback?

Autographed photographs of Matt Leinart and Colt Brennan hang on the wall in Bruce Rollinson's office at Mater Dei High School. In their inscriptions, Leinart and Brennan thank Rollinson for his guidance during their high school careers. They are among nine quarterbacks he has coached who went on to play in college during his 19 seasons as the coach at Mater Dei. Yet of all the quarterbacks to play at the Catholic school, the best could be the 17-year-old junior Matt Barkley. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Barkley is rated as one of the top recruits for the class of 2009. Last month, he quietly committed to Southern California, where his father, Les, played water polo in college. He chose USC over UCLA, California, Oregon, Florida and Notre Dame.

A highly touted QB and a USC legacy as well. WE ARE 'SC!

I read some articles about him. He seems like a humble kid, who's going to come in and sit behind Mustain/Sanchez and do big things once he gets his chance.

"Last month, he quietly committed to Southern California, where his father, Les, playerd water polo in college."

"quietly" because he didn't want you to know his dad played water polo.

Another legacy is added to QB/Tailback-U.......go SC

Do yourself a favor..next time ya feel the need to poke some loose broad? Strap on a Mao Condom....their durable...long lasting..and that menthol additive leaves a fresh...mountainy cool senstation.

I'll just be happy if he keeps the commitment. I'm an Oregon fan, but it'd be nice to see more kids, especially the big names, stick to their guns instead of switching between schools.

Fight On! SC already has commitments from 8 Rivals100 players for 2009!

MARINsur4 don't you just love it? 2008 is supposedly our "worst class" under Pete and some have the class ranked between #10 & #5 in the country. WHat will happen in 2009?

February 11, 2008  04:29 PM ET

In 2009 USC will be hit HARD for the Reggie (low life) Bush fiasco. Penalties will include, (but not be limited to), loss of scholarships, games and Reggie will have to take an oath of faithfulness to Kim Kardashian which should effectively end their engagement. I can't wait to see it all come down. BITE ON!!!

February 11, 2008  04:37 PM ET

I could care less about ND getting Barkley. Frankly, any idiot knew he was going to SC. Marlon Brown and Cierre Wood are the 2 best prospects in this class by far.

February 11, 2008  04:55 PM ET

What in the hell is that?

February 11, 2008  05:46 PM ET

bite on? what? jealousy is a disease gariboy. go back to you cave now.

IrishR#1 - what happened to your strategic offensive advantage under Weis? Midwest. Sweet.

Deep South,

Don't disrespect water polo. I have never played it but probably couldn't. I have heard it is a grueling sport that requires a lot of stamina. I have also heard (from a guy who played it in college) that under the water is a lot of kicking and gouging. It is a tough sport. Reserve ridicule for curling.

Glad Matt Barkley decided to stay at home and play for Mighty USC.

Fight on Trojans!

MARINsur-****. That's what it was, and the offense won't be great again this year. It will be good enough to win 6 or 7 games. 2009 should be a good year, and if it's not, it's Charlie's last year.

February 12, 2008  09:20 AM ET

IrishR#116 (I think that was the offensive rank of ND this year) and ****, USC will be just fine. No penalties, no loss of scholarships, just winning. Learn to live with it.

irishR#1 - you think ND will fire him? are more alumni for or against him staying with his big contract?
