07:19 AM ET 07.15 | The clock may already be ticking, slowly, toward Ilya Kovalchuk being reunited with the National Hockey League. [Kovalchuk] will be removed from the "voluntary retired list" upon reaching his 35th birthday on April 15, 2018, and thereby would become an unrestricted free agent if the winger were to pursue a return to the NHL for the 2018-19 season. This is according to Bylaw 8.5 (c) and confirmed by deputy commissioner Bill Daly in a series of emails with The Post. ... He would not be able to return to the NHL without unanimous consent of the league's member clubs before 2018-19 unless he were to sit out for at least one calendar year. If Kovalchuk were to sit that long within the next four years, he would then need the Devils' permission to rejoin the NHL.

He's getting the same deal from SKA St.Petersburg as he did with the Devils except it's tax free! He took almost double the money and he's playing at home and doesn't have to live in New Jersey.

He'll soon find out that nothing is 'free' in Mother Russia as soon as the local chapter of the ?????????????? ?????????? (Russian mafia) starts leaning on him for protection for him and his family.

I would certainly hope that the nhl community would blacklist him and any other players that try these types of stunts.

You would hope, but all you need is one GM trying to save his job.

If i was the Oilers i would be real careful about building a second line around Yak. Guaranteed the KHL comes for him shortly before the first contract ends.

I'm sure the local chapter of the Russian mafia in New Jersey was also doing a good job of being in regular contact with their client, Mr. Kovalchuk.
