Numerous league sources expect Redskins coach Jim Zorn to contact Tennessee for permission to interview their assistant head coach, Sherman Smith, for the offensive coordinator position (Smith and Zorn are former teammates and close friends), among others. Zorn is also interested in hiring Seattle running backs coach Stump Mitchell, who has spent nine seasons with the Seahawks, to fill the same position in Washington, league sources said.

Let's see, an unproven former QB coach trying to bring in college coaches to fill his staff. Who does he think he is, Jimmy Johnson?

Naw, he just wants to free up some college space so that he can quit and still have a job like petrino...

It hasn't even started and it already is starting to look bad.

Zorn must be one heckuva an interview!

Who knows? Maybe he is the second coming of Pop Warner, Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi all rolled into one.....

P.S. Looking at that picture, is Zorn a missing son of Vince McMahon?

Zorn does look like Vince McMahon. That's freaky.

Got evidence of that quote?

February 11, 2008  10:03 AM ET

He does look like Jim; maybe he setting up the NFL for a smackdown.

Sherman Smith is Assistant Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans, not Tennessee Vols.

February 11, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I'm pretty sure Ernest Byner is already the Redskins running back coach and I haven't heard about him being fired, quiting, etc. so why do we need Stump Mitchell? Yeah, why do we want the guy that had Shaun Alexander gaining something like 3 yards a carry? I'll keep Byner...

I love how some (non Redskins) fans get their underwear all in a bunch over the hiring of a head coach. Some of you must live one boring life!

February 11, 2008  11:07 AM ET

WHY THE HELL WOULD WE FIRE BYNER?!!!!!

February 11, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Nice headline, Sherman Smith works for the Tennessee Titans, not The University of Tennessee.

Who writes this stuff for SI? The VOLS are College team and the TITANS are the Pro team. Can I apply for a job as a writer?

February 11, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Earnest Byner WAS the RBS coach for the skins. His contract however expired this past Thursday and The Danny didn't re-sign him. He has had a few interviews for the same position with other teams such as the Bucs. Byner is long gone and seeing how most of the previous staff was treated once Joe retired I can't imagine Byner wanting to come back anyways!

The Zorn era begins!!

February 11, 2008  06:51 PM ET

I thought Byner already re-signed. Oh well i'm sure Zorn & the Skins will find a way to keep both.

And the whole deal with the colors.....big freaking deal. The guy was nervous, cut him some slack. Oh no, he got the colors wrong, he can't possibly know how to coach!

It is rather amazing that a guy who has never even called an offensive play , let alone a game plan, as a coach in an NFL game is now in charge of all of it. It does not mean he will not do fine, but it surely is quite the jump..A true leap of faith if you would..
