07:21 AM ET 07.16 | Welcome back, Ron Hextall, who on Monday was named assistant GM and director of hockey operations for his former team. As a goalie, Hextall spent 11 seasons with the Flyers. He later spent seven years with the team as a scout and director of pro hockey personnel before becoming vice president and assistant GM with the Los Angeles Kings in 2006-07. The Kings, with many ex-Flyers in the lineup, won the Stanley Cup in 2012. "He's probably the most highly thought-of guy who is not a general manager," GM Paul Holmgren said. "To add him to our staff is huge." Holmgren said he "absolutely" sees Hextall as a future GM. ...[Hextall] made it clear he wants to be a GM some day. "If that were to work out at some point when Homer's had enough, that's great," he said.

Given the track record, Homer just hired his replacement.

If Homer didn't get fired this summer, i'm not sure what you think he can do to ever get fired.

Clarkie got "fired" eventually. May take 15 years but it can happen.

"He's probably the most highly thought-of guy who is not a general manager," GM Paul Holmgren said.

the next quote from ol' Homer will be "Et Tu Ron hextall?"

But the problem is he will be part of the 'old boy' system. Flyers need to get a GM from outside their network to bring in a fresh approach. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Now that Hextall has worked for a SC champion and seen how its supposed to be done, maybe he can bring some of that to Philly

I was thinking that. Can Philly hire anyone that did not play for them?

Did Philly just hire its next GM?

More importantly does he have a parade route?

Uh huh. Wasn't that the point with Laviolette?

Lavoilette got the Flyers to the SC Finals and damn near won the thing.

That's the usual way Snider works, but I'm ok with this. Hextall spent a lot of time out of the organization and, as Drysdale points out, was part of the Kings SC winning team. I think he will have some fresh perspectives to bring to the job. I just hope Holmgren listens.

I wonder if when Hextall goes to work he first stands in the doorway of his office and raps both sides of the door frame with a stick for a minute or so?

LOL - And he'll probably take a swing at any visiting GMs.

I've re-watched some of the '97 Final and I don't think much of Hextall.

They need not worry, when he's not up to snuff they'll go to his backup...Garth Snow.
