Rangers closing on Garza deal

07:09 AM ET 07.19 | Soon, the speculation may finally come to an end. The Texas Rangers are moving closer to acquiring right-hander Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs, according to an official involved in the discussions. The teams have had extensive talks on Garza and discussed the framework of a deal, but other clubs remain in the mix, major league sources say. One of those teams is the Los Angeles Dodgers, who maintained interest in Garza even after acquiring right-hander Ricky Nolasco from the Marlins. The Rangers, however, are the "most motivated" of any team in the discussions, sources say. The Cubs, in trying to formulate their return for Garza, have discussed Rangers prospects at various levels, including Triple-A third baseman Mike Olt.

Add to it that Colby Lewis isn't ready yet...

As long as Martin Perez isn't part of the deal, then lets do this!

Sure. Because it worked out so well dealing with the Cubs last year.

Mike Olt is hitting .208 at AAA. I don't think the Cubs are trading Garza for that.

Cubs in exchange should want Profar. they could play him at third base or SS. if he can develop offensively put him at third base. Profar would maybe be the incentive for Castro to work a little harder on his defense.

The Cubs will want multiple prospects. You point out they already have a shortstop. I think the Cubs will young arms.

Garza has been pitching really well. He's going to bring a decent return for a 3 month rental.
