10:28 AM ET 07.20 | Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, known for his Super Bowl predictions, made a mention of the "SB" word Thursday. It was followed by a long pause and a wide smile as he waited for reporters to catch on to the fact that he was joking. "But I do think we've taken steps to improve our team," Jones said. "We are a better team -- there's no question in my mind -- than we were at this same time last year. "We've got a lot of work to do to compete in the very first ballgame. We've got a formidable opponent and that's exactly the way we'll approach this thing, and it won't be about the goals at the end of the year as much as it is how we prepare ourselves to be ready to play the Giants [in the season opener, Sept. 8 in Arlington]." The Cowboys, who on Friday traveled to training camp in Oxnard, Calif., are only 22-26 over the last three seasons and have not made the playoffs since 2009. Jones had promised to make it uncomfortable in the off-season after a second consecutive 8-8 campaign, and to that end, the Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin to run the defense and turned over play-calling duties to Bill Callahan.

Not to say that Dallas needs a complete overhaul. But they've been playing with the same core group of players for way too long.

They need to make significant changes in order to get to the next level (GM obviously not being an option).

And While I'm at It, Let me Mention, The Super Bowl!! Which will be play in New York with New York as The Home Team!

Poor Jerry is so miss understood!!!

They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table.
They'll stone ya when you are young and able.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck.
They'll stone ya and then they'll say, "good luck."
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end.
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again.
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car.
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar.
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone.
They'll stone you when you are walking home.
They'll stone you and then say you are brave.
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

I get it.

So you're saying there are several teams that could be better than Dallas.

Depending on how things shake out.

Have you alerted the media?

JJ and the Cowboys may make the playoffs this year but they have to quit giving up 34 points and 370 yards in those games.

July 20, 2013  01:00 PM ET

aside from the SB joke, which he couldn't reisit, JJ sounds a bit humbled. it's rare that i agree with anything he says or does, however, he said some decent stuff. just not sure they are much better now than they were this time last year.

July 20, 2013  01:03 PM ET

I'll say this for JJ, he doesn't lack confidence. While I shudder at the thought of him being GM, he does at least fork out the dough, unlike Cleveland, Jax, Cincy, et al. How many owners can take a team that hasn't done squat in almost 20 years and make them the highest valued franchise in America?

The Jets are Jacksonville north, sorry. Or Vikings east.

Jerry.. start by having your team winning playoff games 1st before talk of SuperBowl

Injuries, injuries, injuries -- that will impact what happens and I don't give a damn what team it is. Ya' gotta' stay healthy!!
