06:23 PM ET 07.20 | If the course conditions at the British Open at Muirfield don't get you, the officials will; Hideki Matsuyama was only thee shots behind the leaders on Saturday when he was assessed a penalty for slow play on the 17th hole, evidently taking too long to hit his shot out of the rough. Matsuyama went from a par to a bogey on the hole, a crushing blow considering how difficult is has been for golfers to record good scores on the treacherous course. The Royal & Ancient golf society said Matsuyama and partner Johnson Wagner were 15 minutes behind schedule. Wagner defended Matsuyama after their round.

Doubt the R&A would've pulled that stunt with Eldrick or Westwood...

July 20, 2013  10:48 PM ET

A lot of players were guilty of that not just Matsuyama

Congrats GB for picking Phil! I liked Phil's quote that 6 U.S. Open runner ups should count as a major win.

That was wonderful drama.

Enbrel Phil reminds me of how Vijay was playing at around the same age...maybe the arthritis meds are his version of the antler spray.

Woods was actually put on the clock today.

Big difference between being on the clock and charged a penalty.

Yup, that darn Mickelson fella stormed back with a very impressive round and took the championship away from a couple of guys who probably thought it was theirs to lose. Not bad for a guy that stands on the wrong side of the ball ;)Congrats to Golden Bay for picking the winner. The first pick in the PGA Championship pool is yours.

It was fun to watch!

Stuck with him for the first three and even picked him for the Briitish before the Scottish so I'll stick with wrong side for the PGA as well...

Westwood remind you of any hockey team Rex?

Feliciations, Golden Bay.

Didn't like what the R&A did on #6. They pushed the tee so far back, they took the wall on the left out of play. Much more fun when you have to drive over it then look at your caddy to see if he likes your chances at finding your ball.

Mockingly rolled my eyes at the 'six runner-ups' line, Bishop. Only in your mind, Phil.

Rex, I'll take Jason Day for the PGA Championship. Thank you.

Rex, thanks for running the contest!

yes, thanks Rex.....even though my pick was cut.....and none of my previous picks have ended up noteworthy, I appreciate you running this game......it's fun.

A win for the ages. It was great to see a true champion come from 5 back to win. What a great performance. Way to go Phil.

Drives me nuts to play golf at a slow pace. Be ready to hit your shot when you get to your ball.

July 22, 2013  10:21 AM ET

Congrats to Phil! He did it on a links course too even though that's not his game (or any American for that matter).

No need to thank me folks, I enjoy this as well.I'm going to make a small change to the schedule and open the betting window effective immediately. Since Stranger went ahead and made his pick and I don't feel like telling our past commissioner that he has to wait it just seems like the right thing to do.For the PGA Championship at Oak Hills, which starts August 8th, the current picks are;Golden Bay.....................................Phil MickelsonStranger.........................................Jason Day

This way it gives Stranger plenty of time to change his pick.
