Foles, Barkley both believe they can be No. 1

07:02 AM ET 07.23 | On a day when Nick Foles said, "I'm not here to be a backup," Matt Barkley wanted to make sure he felt part of a three-man race. Barkley, the 22-year-old rookie from USC, reported to his first NFL training camp Monday at the NovaCare Complex and pronounced himself part of the Eagles'quarterback competition. Not a third-stringer. Not a backup. A contender to be the opening-day starter. "There is an open competition," Barkley said. "I absolutely feel like I've got to be a part of it. I've got to challenge myself, just like any other guy on the team." Although conventional wisdom says that Michael Vick and [Foles] are the main contenders to be the Eagles' starter against the Redskins on Sept. 9, Barkley isn't buying it. He's part of the equation, too. "Your mindset has to be that you're in the race to start," Barkley said.

Now the Eagles and the Jets have a Quarterback competition. How nice.....

Chill for a season, Matt. Let Michael Vick get hurt. Let Foles prove that while he's OK as a backup, he's not going to take a team to the playoffs.

Then hope that you can do better when you get your chance. Your time will come. Be prepared.

Nah, because they'll tank after Vick gets hurt, to land Johny Football.

There will be a lot of teams in the Squeal for Manziel competition. They'd be better off doing their homework and trying to find the next Russell Wilson.

Well, yeah, but when you consider undiscovered gems drafted in later rounds, Russell Wilson was the next Tom Brady.

Hail to the Redskins!

Good for Barkley, don't accept a lesser role until the competition settles it.

Vick's gurney awaits, that's for sure. I think this kid will be starting later this year.

I thought he was pretty much known, it was just the other QB's were higher on the scouting radar, initially. But yeah, no one thought he would emerge as a dynamic starter in his rookie season.

I would rather have a rookie say "I'm here to pay attention and learn how to play in the NFL."

If he goes down, I hope it's on a snowy day so they can use a dogsled.
