Former UK star no fan of one-and-done

07:15 AM ET 07.23 | Whoops. He says he didn't mean to, but former University of Kentucky basketball player Jeff Sheppard sure caused a stir when video (via KSTV) surfaced Monday in which he bemoaned the steady stream of one-and-done Wildcats under John Calipari and jokingly called the coach "the enemy" during a speech to fans at the annual UK Convention in Franklin, Ohio, over the weekend. Sheppard said it was more fun to watch players progress through long careers at Kentucky, but those days are over. "And I don't like it," he said. "I don't think the Kentucky fan overall likes it. We've had to accept it, and it's working, because we're winning. We're winning national championships -- or at least one. And so it's the way that it is." He praised Calipari's success in his remarks to the crowd, calling his four-year run "remarkable."

The NBA loves one and done. They have a great D-League aka college basketball. They don't have to spend a dime on it and don't have to assume the risk of picking a HS kid that doesn't pan out. Again, the NBA gets a trial year to observe without risking anything.

This thread needs a pic of Ashley Judd in nothing more than a UK jersey.

No offense, guys but Ashley's what, 45 - 46 yrs old now? IMHO, that ship has sailed.

0-6, you need to recruit Kate Upton et al as the new "face" of UK basketball

Nobody from Kentucky, including the coach, is in favor of the one and done, the NCAA just can not do anything about it, they are too weak.Go Kentucky GoGo Kentucky GoGo Kentucky Go

Then it's up to the individual schools to make staying and working towards a degree equally attractive, IMO.

The NCAA could force scholarships to be a four year duration. If Kentucky, in this case, gives a scholarship, it is tied up for the next four years, regardless if the player leaves for the NBA. If the player leaves after 1 year, that scholarship cannot be freed for another 3 years. This would force universities to stop recruiting one-and-done players, who should skip college and go directly to the D-league, and start recruiting college students. Maybe for once there would be college students playing athletics instead of non-college students who play as if it is the minor leagues.

I disagree. Besides, the pic to which I refer was made some years ago.

I keep telling my wife that when she turns 40, I'm trading her in for two 20's.

She retorts that when she's 40, I'll be 45 and no longer wired to handle 220.........

Love that red-head's fire

Quite "remarkable" last year, was he not?

Maybe if they're lucky, Kentucky will actually make the NCAA tournament this upcoming season.
Wouldn't that be an improvement over last season?

Careful about the "some years ago" reference when addressing 0-6. He may think you're referring to the tryst he had with Helen of Troy. I think she sexted him some pretty risque stuff.

LOL!

You know what they say, a woman is in her prime around 40, and men around 20, so she may be the one trading YOU in on a pair of 22.5's when she hits that magic number. She may wanna live in Cougarville, be careful dude.
