Weis blasts his own program

07:16 AM ET 07.23 | Coaches take all manner of preseason approaches, but few show up as blunt as Charlie Weis did for Big 12 Media Days. Here are three of Weis' beauties from his 20-minute Q and A with media ... For starters: "We're 1-11 and picked by everybody to finish last in the league, and that's justifiable. If I were you, I'd pick us in the same spot." ... The capper came when someone asked about Weis' [recruiting ]pitch, given the miserable state of the Jayhawks program. Weis hit on KU's academics, its facilities set-up and the lure of immediate playing time. He says he puts it this way to the typical high school recruit, referring to players already in the program: "Have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that? So if you don't think you can play here, where do you think you can play?"

Wow, just wow. How long would you keep your coach that would say, have you looked at that pile of crap out there? If he does not like the players, get rid of them, I know, 25 per year cap, that holds any team back in this situation is why it should not be there.

I agree. As soon as a coach takes over a team, all those guys in the locker room, are "his guys". You don't run them down in public. Show some class.

If it is really crap, in particular sheep crap, I know one school with students that drool over it as they gaze over that "pile of crap"!

Do you refer to the ones formulating composted sheep manure for use in organic barley production to be grown under contract for a proposed craft brewers cooperative?

Doesn't even have to be composted for the one I'm thinking of.

Why is this guy still coaching in college?

July 23, 2013  09:32 AM ET

Momma always said, "Honesty is your best policy".

Momma never coached a team as crappy as KU, though....

Because HS ADs don't like him.

that says something about his ability to recruit decent high school graduates to come to KU. Most schools A.D.s would not tolerate a coach making those comments. Why would anybody want to play for this a##. If you don't like your program get out.

They couldn't afford to feed him.

I see coach Front Butt is at it again.

Jabba's only trying to extort more $$ from the KU boosters. Browbeating is a tried and true method.

Stop spending all the $$$ on BBall players.. Balance it out

Why you talkin' bout Kentucky that way?

'sides, better to be good at one thing that crappy at all of 'em!

I think people will be surprised with KU this year. They were in a lot of the games they lost last year and with a new QB, they should have a more balanced offense.

lord knows that I dislike Weis, and his comments should be enough to get him fired...but overall, I can't say I dislike the approach. He knows that RIGHT NOW he cannot recruit quality high school prospects, so by reclaiming juco transfers with good potential, perhaps he figures to get the team to be more competitive than it had been in the past, thus allowing him to recruit better hs kids.

Either way, I'm interested to see how the project pans out...

Think you might be right ....but that big pile of crap they call a coach needs a little attitude ajustment from his superiors.
