07:19 AM ET 07.23 | Loading a team only with high-end goal-scorers might look nice on a fantasy draft sheet, but it's not going to win many Olympic medals. An Olympic team can't be loaded with only offensive stars, it needs players who can fill other roles, like checking, hitting, penalty killing and providing a net-front presence. Justin Abdelkader is hoping his particular set of skills will earn him a spot on Team USA for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Abdelkader, a Muskegon native, was one of three Detroit Red Wings who received an invitation to attend the U.S. Olympic orientation camp Aug. 26-27 in Arlington, Va. Goaltender Jimmy Howard and defenseman Danny DeKeyser are the others. "Hopefully, I bring attributes they're looking for and they see me as someone who can help them out," Abdelkader said.

I'd expect him to be the limo service. I used to own a Kaiser once upon a time.

If they need a guy who works extremely hard but can't score worth spit, Abdelkader is their guy.

I can't hear his name without thinking of Steven Tyler singing "Love in an Abdelkader...."

Hard worker but a light scorer. Maybe 3rd line, and wouldn't hurt the team.

I don't expect he'll make the team, but as a Red Wings fan, I'm excited that he got an invite. USA Hockey talent evaluators thought highly enough of him in his 13 games in the National Hockey League to warrant an invite over about 60 other active American defensemen with more NHL experience.

And if he does make the team, Red Wings fans will need to be treated for elevated levels of polished silver running through their veins.
