This week determines Young's fate in Philly

07:12 AM ET 07.24 | So far, the Phillies have been sitting tight. If the Phillies have a rough week in St. Louis and Detroit, on the other hand, they could sell -- with Michael Young pretty much a lock to get moved if they go that route. ("The next week," said one exec who spoke with them, "will determine Michael Young's fate more than anyone else on their roster.") But even if they do decide to listen on Jonathan Papelbon, other teams increasingly view him as practically untradable. "He's just not that valuable with that contract," says one AL exec. "If the Phillies want premium players back, they'd have to take half the contract [which has two years, worth $26 million, remaining, plus a vesting $13 million option]. I don't see any team giving up an A-list prospect and taking that entire contract."

IF they have a tough week? get serious

July 24, 2013  10:09 AM ET

The best the Phillies can do is try to unseat the national for second place. the chances the Phillies making the playoffs are slim to none. They would have to win the division, which would only happen if braves would do a totally tank the last two months. Now that they are healthy again, I doubt that will happen. Unload older veterans while you can get some value out of them for younger talent you can reload with.

Detroit is desperately looking for a closer. unless they find one somewhere else they may seriously consider papelbon to get them to finish line in their division. Cleveland doesn't seem to fade . Detroit can't afford to give up leads late in games. Detroit realizes Papelbon might be expensive but they have no choice.

Ruben...SELL SELL SELL

July 24, 2013  11:43 AM ET

I love the Phillies and would like to see a resurgence like the '83 team after the '80 WS. But lets be realistic, after that team, it was pretty dark. Heck Amaro should remember the dark times in his rookie season. Trade what you can and start over.

The Phillies could get a haul of top prospects this year if they are willing to go into complete rebuild mode and trade Lee, Papelbon, and a few others.
