07:08 AM ET 07.25 | As it relates to his attempt to return this season, Cardinals veteran ace Chris Carpenter has had a rough week. [Carpenter] halted his rehab because of a creeping numbness in his pitching hand that has stirred concerns it will lead to the condition that has forced him from the mound several times before. Carpenter met with manager Mike Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak on Tuesday and decided to "take a step back" in his attempt to return to the team. ... An official said Carpenter is not expected to pitch "in the near future." "If I continue to keep throwing at the intensity of rehabbing and 100 pitches that is going to lead down the same path it has when it goes numb," Carpenter said Tuesday. ... Mozeliak said Carpenter could be "back to square one."

I greatly appreciate everything Carpenter has done for the Cardinals. Please stop this before you do permanent damage. Take the rest of the year off then retire.

Carp has given the Cards all the effort/guts/heart as a player that the team could have asked of him for a long time but it's time for him to hang up the cleats. Both he and the team need to move on now.

You can invite Carpenter to Jupiter next February as a non- roster player and have the attitude of nothing to lose and everything to gain but probably won't happen.

Yes Cards fans, send Carpenter to Jupiter and Yadier Molina to Uranus.

It does say something about the Cardinals loyalty to him, even though they realize he's probably through.

I have to agree. I'm amazed that he even came back to this point, but it's probably time to hang them up. If he's feeling numbness again, there is nothing good that is going to come of this.

Bitter much?

As much as I love Carp, his services are not needed as a starting pitcher.

He would only be best served as a middle reliever.

This team is in 1st place and that is with Garcia out.

Carp would be great to see, but he should get healthy and move on...
