Hoke: Less than Big Ten title 'unacceptable'

07:19 AM ET 07.25 | This time around, Brady Hoke isn't shy about complimenting his team -- and no wonder, considering his expectations. [Hoke] has made clear on more than one occasion anything less than winning a Big Ten championship is unacceptable. During the first day of the Big Ten Kickoff on Wednesday, the Michigan coach also made perfectly clear what he thought of his team's 8-5 record last season. "That's unacceptable," he said. "It's unacceptable at Michigan. It's unacceptable for us." ... "We're Michigan and we have high expectations and that bar as been up there for a number of years," Hoke said. "It is what it is, and we've got to do better. Bottom line is to win the Big Ten championship." Anything less is unacceptable.

Just gonna have to accept third, fourth, or even fifth best. Lil bro has their number, so do the Bucks, maybe the COC and also Wisky too.

Yep Colonel you got it right.......but TSUN can dream of winning the title just like little kids dream of going to the candy store.

Lil bro has their number by losing last year? And OoMOSU game was close, so I am not exactly sure where thats a Lose. But good to get peoples opinions.

July 25, 2013  08:45 AM ET

He now has "his players" no longer does he have to have RR's 5'7 155lb running backs. Thats why hoke is willing to start upping the ante. Cause he knows what he has around him, he has a Qb that isnt a 100% a spread qb, he has a OL that doesn't average 270 lb, like during RR.

While I applaud his drive the problem is now that if something happens and somewhere during the season it turns out they cannot meet that goal this team will become very flat. I am not sure what he is supposed to say but it does concern me that he is setting a very distinct and singular goal for this team. I like Hoke so I hope he is successful.

Its like a few weeks ago when someone asked D. Gardner if they could beat OSU. He answered "Yes". And the media took off with it. What is he supposed to say? NO? Of course they can beat osu, they could beat everyone on the schedule, they also could go 6-6. But these are all players, they want to win, they think they can win. Same With Hoke, do they have the talent to win it all, absolutely, He is just setting the bar for his players, Hell I bet Jerry Kill at Minnesota is telling people they can win the big ten.

EVERY Michigan coach has said winning the Big Ten is an expectation................surely you remember Bo Schembechler and his annual rants, right?

Seriously, OSU should change their home uniforms to orange jumpsuits and their away jerseys should be pinstripes.

It's all about goal orientation and I think winning your conference should be the goal even if it's considered a lofty goal from a talent standpoint.

Here's what I know from B12 experience:

OU's goals each year were to (1) beat Texas and (2) win the conference.
KSU's goals were to (1) beat Kansas and (2) win the conference.
UTx's goals were to (1) beat OU and (2) win 10 games and (3) get into a BCS bowl.
A&M's goal was to (1) beat Texas. Nothing else mattered.

3 of the teams above were loaded with talent, but UTx and A&M rarely won the conference. OU won the most conference titles and got the most BCS invites. KSU won the conference with players that weren't heavily recruited by the others. KSU and OU had the proper goal orientation IMO.

u sure that beating 0U was part of UTx's goals?

MB always said, "It's just another game- 1 of 12 on the schedule"

July 25, 2013  09:58 AM ET

This is not new, or a change from Hoke's first two seasons as head coach in Ann Arbor. He has said the same thing each season. Both at the B1G media days, and at the end of the season. Nothing to get excited about.
