07:23 AM ET 07.25 | Credit Gov. Rick Snyder for taking the positive view. [Snyder] touted the $650 million new hockey arena and 45-block entertainment district planned for the blighted Cass Corridor Wednesday as an example that big Detroit development projects will continue to move forward amid Chapter 9 bankruptcy. "How many tremendously good things are going on in Detroit? That's why I think this project is so wonderful. There is a very bright future," Snyder said during a brief exchange with reporters at the offices of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. ... "We are addressing a specific situation in Detroit with bankruptcy. It's about getting a fresh start with the city of Detroit's government," he said. He added that the long-term impact of the new arena will "create a better environment."

Don't they have bigger problems than building a new arena? I know it is suppose to revitalize and provide revenue and blah, blah, blah but there are only so many home games per season. They should be looking to, I don't know, bulldoze the burned out and crumbling buildings and try to not get people shot and mugged all the time.

I agree, but there's no money in it, and "we made sure your kid didn't get shot" is a lousy campaign slogan"

You want to create a better environment?

Bring in a whole bunch of bulldozers and wrecking balls. There are buildings up there that look like they were imported from New Orleans post-Katrina.

"Save the tatas"?

If they are going to put the arena and an entertainment district in the middle of a run down ghetto who in their right mind is going to go in there at night? They would have to make the security like they did in the Green Zone in Baghdad and I'm sure there are a lot of similarities between the two.
