Boston must outbid Cards, A's for Peavy

07:11 AM ET 07.26 | Will Boston pay? The Red Sox need to go get Jake Peavy. They have little other choice now. The prospect-laden Cardinals plus the always dangerous A's are thought by people familiar with the talks to be the other two main teams in a big mix for Peavy. But Boston needs Peavy more, has an even better reserve of prospects from which to trade and is locked in just as tough a battle for the division crown as the other two teams, if not tougher. Word is going around that the Red Sox are mulling over a play for a third baseman with rookie Jose Iglesias starting to come back to earth, and they're always looking for bullpen help. But in a tight, tough battle, the best place to make a difference would be the rotation. ... The Red Sox have no excuses, as they easily have the wherewithal to get it done.

This guy's been injured 4 of the last 5 years. He has one year plus a player option for a second year left on his contract. Of course he'd have to get at least 250 innings next year in order to exercise that option. I don't think I like this idea. I want to win, but I don't want to see a trade that will lose a top prospect just to add members to the DL.

I'm kind of surprised the Braves are not in the mix after losing Hudson.

Keep repeating the mantra: Bridge Year, Bridge year. Bridge Year. Do not trade anything of value for old, broken down spare parts.

He would make a suitable fit pitching alongside Dempster, and he would still be a sock

I think it would depend on the prospect, but I tend to agree with you. I wouldn't trade any of the young stud arms or Wong for him.

Pedroia even up sounds about right.

Given what's available this year and the prices being paid, I'd Just as soon MO keep the prospects and go with what we have. There are no good shortstops or starters available for anywhere near a reasonable price. I'd wouldn't mind the team giving up top prospects if a substantial upgrade to Kozma or Kelly could be found.

Being a sock is all Peavy ever wanted.

they would have to eat a lot of that contract though. $20 million a foot is overpaying.

It's almost as bad as what that geriatric NY SS is making.

When you consider the maintenance and electrical charging costs for Jeter's "Scooter" it isn't even close to being as bad.

My God, I didn't even take the utilities into account.
