Luongo's 'shocked' ex-agent blames Vancouver

07:20 AM ET 07.26 | For the better part of 20 years, Gilles Lupien had represented Roberto Luongo -- and even though the professional relationship is split, the agent sympathizes with his former client. Lupien believes that in being so public for so long about the possibilities of a trade, the team undermined its own player. The media turned on Luongo, the fans turned on him, and there was no escape. He was like "a cornered rat," Lupien says. "I'm in net," Lupien says of the goaltender he considers almost a son. "There's a guy at the red line with the puck and the fans start to boo me. The people aren't behind you. The newspapers aren't behind you. But you have to stop the puck. ... It's almost impossible for him to perform under those circumstances." Lupien says it could have been handled differently.

maybe if he played well, at least up to the stupid contract he has (hmm....did the agent have any hand in THAT?)maybe the fans wouldn't boo him?

No, Gilles, no! Not the TEAM! It was Mike Gillis, the Canuck's dumb GM who undermined Lulongo with his stupidity. He sent him down the river in a canoe without a paddle and is now trying to snatch him out of it before it goes over the falls.

Yes, it could have been handled differently: don't give Hank reason to put a beachball in your photo!

the problem being that he didn't play oh-so-bad. He had some poor outings at the wrong moment, more than anything.

From a goalie's perspective, I don,t care for Luongo, don't like his style at all and do find that he was vastly overrated while in his prime...but...his stats over the past few seasons have been decent. All in all, he's not as bad as the media and fans like to pretend he is.

Agreed. What's killing him is the LT contract and the big money he's getting. Because of that, their expectations are WAY higher than they should be, making for a very difficult environment to play in.

Just keep taking their money... and keep taking it... and keep taking it... and keep taking it...

Ferme la bouche, Monsieur Lupien.

Egg-actly. It's like the other side of a sub-prime trade; not my responsibility to educate the minions on their own stupidity.

Sounds like life in the red-light district...I guess there is a red-light that flashes behind him from time to time.

There ya' go...

I'm sure he didn't feel like a cornered rat when the Nucks waived THAT contract in front of him.
