Kurt Busch seriously considering Indy 500 run

11:06 AM ET 07.28 | As Kurt Busch stood on pit road Saturday waiting to make his qualifying attempt at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he couldn't help but wonder what it might be like to be in a similar situation at the same track -- but in a different month of the year. The 2004 champion of NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, Busch tested an IndyCar at the Brickyard in May, and has a clear interest in potentially competing in the Indianapolis 500. That curiosity was further piqued Saturday, when he stood down in Indy's canyon of a frontstretch before qualifying sixth for the 20th edition of the NASCAR event at the 104-year-old track. On May 9, Busch took part in an IndyCar rookie test on the 2.5-mile speedway and passed it by turning a speed of 218.210 mph. Although neither the driver nor Andretti Autosport, the open-wheel team that supplied a vehicle for the test, were prepared to make a run at this year's Indy 500, Busch is clearly intrigued by the idea.

Sounds like that locked up ride with RCR might not be as much of a lock as the media thinks.

Awesome B-25 Mitchell!!

some can hate kyle petty, say he isn't worth a damn, he doesn't deserve to talk, but hes looking more right everyday. Great Job newman. The way nascar is now, you get replaced by someone who finishes 30th and laps down every race, yet you have won races, Daytona 500, indy ect. Please don't say he is getting replaced by harvick. Anyways congrats to the 39 team. Well deserved

i'd love to see kubu run the indy 500 in good equipment..

funny comment by newman today:

Newman on his general lack of emotion in life: "Ogres don't have emotion, you know that."

That's the way its been for awhile in Nascar.. when the sponsors are running the show and can tell car 'owners' who they should have as the drivers and its only going to get worse.. we're going to have inferior drivers driving in good equipment with inferior results

Congratulations to Ryan Newman on a solid win yesterday at the Brickyard. Hopefully that will get him a ride for next year.

Cr@p just read this weeks venue is PocoNO, which really stinks because it is too hot to get anything done around the house and I would have enjoyed a race instead we get the NO.

In all fairness though we do get Watkins Glen the following week and then Michigan then back to another good one Bristol.

2 out of 4 is better than nothing.

According to a Sports Business Journal report, ESPN and Turner ditched NASCAR - not the other way around.

ESPN and Turner Sports each informed NASCAR in early July that they did not intend to bid on the available television rights packages. The rationale was similar for both organizations - declining television ratings made NASCAR a less attractive property.

Turner, according to the report, ''ultimately decided that more NASCAR races weren't worth the investment.'' ESPN, meanwhile, ''had soured on the sport because of declining TV ratings, an aging fan base and a tough ad sales market.''

The report casts a somewhat negative light on both NASCAR - apparently abandoned by two high-profile broadcast partners - and NBC Sports, which will pay $440 million per year for rights through 2024.

Of course, NASCAR will be hard pressed to shed tears over being spurned by ESPN and Turner. Fox and NBC alone will pay NASCAR a combined $740 million per year through 2022, up nearly a third from the current annual haul of approximately $560/year on Fox, ESPN and Turner.

They can claim they dumped Nascar all they want......looks like Nascar made out like a bandit....and is probably loving this "dumping".

July 30, 2013  03:03 PM ET

Personally I don't care who has the rights. as long as I can continue enjoying the races.

I'm hearing no complaints coming from Nascar.. only thing I'm going to miss with ESPN's coverage is Nichole Briscoe.. Shannon Spake & Jamie Little..
Hopefully FOX sports 1 doesn't jack-up the rates too much like they say they are
