Ryan a shell of former self

07:09 AM ET 07.29 | At least for now, Rex Ryan is a company man -- even when it comes to his GM declaring he'd have "a pretty big role" in the quarterback decision. The head coach that changed the culture of this franchise for the better in 2009 should have set the record straight and reclaimed his authority. He should have made it clear that he'd solicit opinions, but that the ultimate decision belonged to him. But he didn't. ... Ryan churned out one company line after the next during a 20-minute press conference. He set his own personal spin cycle in overdrive and danced around questions about the quarterback decision. ... It was sad to see one of the most strong-willed head coaches of the past decade in that light. Ryan was in full-fledged self-preservation mode.

Look, he's just being pragmatic.

Like when your wife says, sure it's ok if you golf on Saturday morning, just no clubhouse drinks afterward because you need to come home and paint the living room.

You agree, because... well.. that's the non-confrontational way to go about it.

Of course you're having drinks in the clubhouse after.

I can't imagine a scenario that doesn't involve Rex cleaning out his office on New Year's Eve.

There's still Buffalo to contend with for that honor.

It could happen as early as Thanksgiving weekend, if they want to get a jump on the competition looking for a new HC.

Or, there could be a massive snowstorm in NYC the last weekend of the season, stranding the Jest in Miami until the first of January.

He may take a page from Shanny and say "we're evaluating talent at this point", around week 5.
