Phillies discussing Lee blockbuster

07:21 AM ET 07.29 | 'Tis the season. If it's July, Cliff Lee must be on the trade market. Actually, Lee hasn't been traded during the season since 2010. Chances are, he will not be traded before the non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday. But the Phillies are discussing their All-Star left-hander with other clubs, according to major league sources, creating the possibility of another Lee blockbuster. One rival executive on Sunday night acknowledged the Phillies' willingness to trade Lee but said the team would do it only "for a lot!!!" meaning, a steep package of talent. The Phils' demands, however, would be but one obstacle to a deal. ... Put it all together, and Lee figures to stay put through the non-waiver deadline. The Phillies then could try to trade him in August.

Wonder who the mystery team is...Atlanta? Texas? NY Yankees? Boston? Pittsburgh? Cleveland? Washington? All make some sense.

New York needs hitting much more than pitching. Plus they are trying to keep payroll down next year.

Hey, if they get the motherlode in top prospects for him (as the article alludes to) then I'm all for it, if the market is unwilling to pony up I'm fine with him staying, good pitcher and good person.

I read a report of Cleveland's top prospects and Cleveland is very weak. It does not seem they would be able to offer the quality of prospects that Philly would want.

I don't see that this T&R says anything. They might move him? They "might" do lots of things. (shrug)

Teams pursuing Lee will cost the team a truckload of top prospects other wise Lee will stay in Philly Philly is looking to reload with youth to replace aging veterans.

July 29, 2013  12:23 PM ET

He won't be traded if they ask for a truckload of prospects. His salary is what he's worth. You only get a truckload of prospects for a player signed to a team friendly deal.

I know Lee is good, but if so, how come every time you hear about him, it's as part of some trade discussion? Guys like this used to anchor teams.

They are in the drivers seat. He is signed really through 2016. basically $25 million a year. He has to approve of any trade though, doesn't he? and then there is the "stiff neck" concern right now. I just do not see a team giving what the Phillies would want and Lee is a good place to start with building around next year in Philly.

Don't know, but Mickey wants that bat back.

The Phillies are in the worst division in Baseball, the value of their players have taken a nose dive!!!

I thought it was Willie Randolph's bat?

Excerpt from Remembering Fenway Park: An Oral and Narrative History of the Home of the Boston Red Sox/Abrams 2011

ROGER KAHN: My memory is Dent slamming a foul ball into his foot and hobbling around and there was a delay of several minutes. During that whole delay Mike Torrez did not throw a single pitch. Normally, you just throw to keep loose. Dent got a new bat from Mickey Rivers. And the first pitch Torrez threw after the break that may have been five minutes, was that shot to leftfield. You could see Yastrzemski thinking he could play the ball and kind of crumpling when the ball went out.

Guess it was Mick the Quick's bat!

The Cardinals aren't on his no trade list; but, I doubt they will give Philly a ton of talent then still have to pay Lee 25 million per year. Lee is a good place to start; but he will be too old by the time Philly can seriously compete again. They have a really bad contract at first, and holes all over the field. Young and Rollins can't have many years left if they have any good years left. Utley is playing on bad knees. Dominic Brown, Lee, and Hammels are the best things they have going for them. They look a lot like the Cardinals did from 2007 until 2010. That's not good because they don't have a Pujols in his prime to carry them.

I think they should get what they can for Lee; but they won't get a lot of top talent unless they help with salary.

*Domonic Brown and Hamels. I misspelled all the names.

Okay, the Cardinals are now losing 9 to 1. I knew most of the pitchers were pitching over their heads the first part of the season. We do need pitching. Most of the young arms aren't ready for the majors and a pennant race. I do wonder what it would take to pry Lee loose. That would seal Beltran's fate as a Cardinal though. I think it would be a good trade off. I think we need another top starter to really have a decent shot at going all the way. He's the only one available that I have any real confidence in.
