Team Canada's best hope in goal?

07:24 AM ET 07.30 | During this upcoming Olympic year, goaltending discussions will generate headlines in both Canada and in the United states. Luongo vs. Quick: Fans in Vancouver have the right to argue about whether GM Mike Gillis should have kept Roberto Luongo or Cory Schneider, but the truth is that Luongo might still be Canada's best option for Sochi. Let's not forget that this man has an Olympic gold medal and two World Championships titles on his resume. He's a proven winner in international competition. Plus, Canada is not rich in exceptional candidates. Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick's performance over the past two seasons clearly have moved him ahead of the Sabres' Ryan Miller on the unofficial depth chart. But no one has forgotten how well Miller played in Vancouver in 2010.

"He's a proven winner "

these guys are kidding, right? So he can win in Japan, but not beat Calgary?

I do hope this is just a case of lazy intern editing. I was expecting to see Quick and/or Miller in the USA net in Sochi.

or, lay a set of goalie equipment across the crease. would certainly be more effective that some of them

Perhaps Stevie could hire Kirk McLean and Andy Moog to "stack the pads."

I like the old Roger Neilson strategy. Leave a goal stick in the crease, and use 6 skaters

Boy! Luongo sure has aged through this whole no-trade ordeal! And, he sure's starting to look like the Red Wings coach! Amazing what stress will do to a fellow!

"But no one has forgotten how well Miller played in Vancouver in 2010 .... and no one's forgotten how lousy Luongo played." <fixed>

one of the dumber things i have read in a while. suggesting that current decisions should be made based on someone's play 4 years ago. ridiculous.

Quick is number 1 in the USA, no question. Luongo is not number 1 in Canada, though he could play himself into that role.

Canada's net is totally up for grabs. Canada can put a lawn chair and they'll still win. Canada is too deep!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I liked the guy who didn't play for Vancouver!

We shall see.... Have you seen the last few WJC? It doesn't leave a lot of hopefuls, but I gotta say that there are a few guys that could grab that torch, but the D in front better have that chemistry and whoever gets the starting job better lock on, or we aren't gonna do as well as some think. I love my country and want them to win, but I'm not going to disagree with something I've been talking about for years. M.A.Fleury looks to be a wash, but how can that be he won a cup 5 or 6 years ago! :)

I agree with the how did he play four years ago bit.....ridiculous. Brodeur could even get a spot on that bench.

If Howard had had a little better 'D' in front of him in game seven against the Hawks, he would be the one to beat out for the 'lympics.

Canada does have the best team on paper, has for a long time. However, in an abbreviated tournament, anything can, and frequently does happen. Chemistry will be the biggest component. I mean, in the last World Championships, Canada lost to Switzerland! The team that can fill roles effectively and gel the fastest has the edge. Russia, USA, Sweden will all be tough and ready for the gold rush. It will be a great tourney to watch. Sucks about the time change though. HATED watching the last WJCs in Russia with the horrid time difference.
