New GM puts Newton on notice

07:10 AM ET 07.31 | When it comes to assessing Cam Newton, Panthers GM Dave Gettleman looks at the bottom line. Newton has thrown for more yards than any quarterback in NFL history in his first two seasons, but has yet to lead the Panthers to a winning season. "Cam has had the best two years of any rookie quarterback in NFL history. And everybody talks about the other young (quarterbacks)," Gettleman said at the Panthers' training camp. "What he's done has been completely lost in the sauce because of the elephant in the room -- the 13-19 record. I'm a big believer in letting nature take its course. Things will happen naturally." Gettleman was asked whether Newton was the quarterback to build around. After a pregnant, seven-second pause, Gettleman said: "Yes, he is. But now it's time to win."

This GM would be gone WAY before Cam Newton. 31 other teams would be glad to have him as a franchise QB. It's the GM's fault that he can't put a winning team together. Cam is carrying more than his load at the end of the day.... Dumb story.

Agreed. Cam Newton will be around longer than this guy and is ten times more valuable. This sub-genius needs to build a team around him.

When he's not running for TD's, he's throwing them.... I guess this idiot wants him to throw them and catch them too.

He should learn that it's not his job to run for TDs, lest he leave the field on a stretcher. Seems to me we saw a good example of that last year....

Hail to the Redskins!

Third year... that's usually when it all start clocking.

The bigger elephants in the room are Atlanta and New Orleans.

Cam needs an OL that blocks, a DL that puts pressure on the other team's QB and a secondary that can cover receivers and make tackles.

July 31, 2013  08:21 AM ET

Do not underestimate Gettleman . He never said anything bad about Newton, he is brutally honest. His first job was to get the mediocre Panthers, being kind here, fixed from being $13 million over the cap. He has them $13 million under now. Gettleman has a proven track record of evaluating NFL talent, he was hired for a reason.

And yes, Newton, like any QB in the NFL, will be judged over the next few years on a lot of things, including winning.

And that is why they hired Gettleman .

So, the pressure to win should really be on him.

You were right with the "clocking" comment. It's usually year three when the defenses figure out the QB and he gets clocked. Gonna happen.

Newton is too immature and self absorbed. He will never be a winner in the NFL. He has a striking resemblance to a QB who came out of Texas a few years ago.....

July 31, 2013  08:50 AM ET

Let us see Cam scores points by throwing to Steve Smith, who is his only other viable offensive weapon, or running them in himself... He has a pathetic offensive line. No running back. No additional receivers.

Why is he on notice? Should be the GM for putting that team together.

RGIII and Brady had their knees ruined by standing in the pocket.... Only difference is The R won't miss a game, whereas Brady sat out a season and cried to change the rules....

HAIL!

He's about as good a GM as Jerry Jones and that is NOT a compliment.
