07:27 AM ET 08.01 | In one year, teenage goaltending prospect John Gibson won gold and was named MVP of the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, backstopped Team USA to bronze at the IIHF World Championship and was named to USA Hockey's Olympic orientation camp later this month. "If you can play, we'll find a spot for you," Ducks director of player development Todd Marchant told NHL.com. "Don't care if you're 18, 19, 20, 21, however old you are." ... "Ever since we drafted him, he has done nothing but get better," Marchant said. "He's succeeded not only in the OHL, but in international competition." ... With Jonas Hiller and Viktor Fasth guiding the Ducks to the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, it's likely Gibson starts his professional career this season in Norfolk.

Of the 20 college players on that 1980 roster, only 5 ended up with 500 NHL games played.

The 2014 USA Olympic team will be loaded with top-line NHL players and there are probably 5 future Hockey Hall of Famers on the team.

The talent gap has closed a bit since.
