Clowney better than Bruce Smith, compares to L.T.

07:27 AM ET 08.02 | How good is Jadeveon Clowney? One of the best things about writing scouting reports is when you get a chance to write up a dominant player. There are days after you have made a school call that you struggle to find the words to describe a player -- that is not the case with [Clowney]. ... [I've] been doing this since 1981, and he is as good a defensive player as I have ever watched. In the 1984 season, Bruce Smith, who became the No. 1 pick in the 1985 NFL Draft, was dominant but not nearly as dominant as Clowney. Smith would take some plays off and played 15-20 pounds heavy that season. I don't think I have seen Clowney take a play off. I did not get a chance to scout Lawrence Taylor, but I worked for the Giants for most of his career and I would have to say that if Clowney reminds me of anyone it's Taylor.

Oh please let's put down the anointing oil!

Clowney had a good year against average-to-weak competition. He looked great against the likes of Vandy, UAB, E. Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Tenn, Arky, Wofford ... let's wait and see how he performs this year before declaring him better than the NFL's all-time greats.

P.S. I realize this op-ed piece is part of Clowney's Heisman campaign.

All I know is, I damm sure hope Brent Pease has a good, solid plan for dealing with Mr Clowney, and also with the rest of his compadres. Focus on him too much, and then somebody else wrecks your backfield.

He's a good edge rusher, but comparisons to Smith and LT are a bit premature.

Crash the fullback into him every single play until he's worn out.

That's too old school.

Nevermind.

We have a FB that can do just that, kid named Hunter Joyer. Definite old school FB, he is. Gets maybe a couple carries a game, and is a helluva lead blocker.

Moose Johnson was good at stufing pass rushers like LT. Made him pay more than a few times too. Slow-footed behemoth OT's can't do it by themselves.

Dr. great comment!!!! I'm sure Clowney is a very good college player, but to compare him to Bruce Smith and L.T. at this time of his career is just wrong.

It's the media being the media, and it's getting worse.

Remember ESPN promoting Reggie Bush as the "best ever" in 2005? They had a "best ever" musical score playing along with his highlights.

2 years ago it was Andrew Luck. Next year they'll find another "best ever" and we'll forget about Jadeveon Clowney.

Jones? Do you maybe mean Driskel?

Luck may be one of the best ever....

Never liked Bush, didn't like it when NO drafted him.

There was a time when half the players on a team were named Jones.

Heard Matt Jones is out with a really bad viral infection, some said serious

I know Driskel had the appendectomy and heard a starting o-line is out for awhile too

Course, this info was from the ex, and she may be goading me into a sucker bet...

ohhh, I see that FanSided ad about Matt Jones being out with viral infection. I went on Gatorsports.com but they have no mention of him, or his condition being an issue, so that's why I asked if maybe you meant Driskel, he was the only player with current health issues covered on GS.com.

Mus says they're treating it, that's about all, no way to know timetable.

Gatorsports getting slow these days....
