Why Greg Oden signed with the Heat

07:42 AM ET 08.03 | The Heat, unwilling to pay a significant luxury tax penalty on Greg Oden's contract, did not offer him the $3.1 million midlevel exception that it has available. And Oden did not demand it. Conley said the Heat will determine when he takes the court in a game, and Oden likes the fact the Heat has no plans to rush him. Conley said Oden will be cleared to play before training camp starts, but it will be coach Erik Spoelstra's decision when he plays. "It could be day 1, it could be game 10, it could be game 30," Conley said. "The most important thing is the Heat doesn't need to pressure him to be ready because of the level of team they have. Some teams can tell you but once the season starts, and the pressure hits, you never know. He felt comfortable with coach Spoelstra. Feeling that from the coach was important. Conley said some owners and general managers say they will be patient with Oden "but feeling that from the coach made an impact. The roster of the Heat makes a lot of sense. It's a team he can work his way into and they don't need him from day one to win games. He can slowly integrate himself in and be ready for the playoffs.

He signed to win a ring like Eddy Curry did.

More Money For Nothing, Bro.

Low risk, high reward pickup for Miami Heat

Oden ages faster than most people. Dude looks 40 years old.

So another words, dude will spend the year rehabbing (again)Hopefully this is the end of the oden talk, cause frankly for a bug that has accomplished nothing, and likely will contribute nothing....its tiresomeIMO....using a vet minimum on him isn't a big deal....My issue all along has been why 'waste' the roster spot on him...when the heat don't need a savior.... just a warm 7' body that can walk and chew gum at the same time.....In down, I think he can chew (unless he hurt his jaw)... but I'm pretty sure he can't walk----so.....

Agree. (sans the typos LOL). For a guy to base his decision on "how late he can play", and "least number of games he could play", it's kinda pathetic. I'm glad other teams passed on him, smart move.

Heat will never need him, other than maybe come out and take 3-4 fouls in 2 minutes which, quite frankly, any dude at my gym could accomplish. It is a missed opportunity for Miami by not testing out some D-league player or a rookie etc.

Win-Win for both sides.

They tried Eddy Curry.. and now Oden. I hope it works out for both parties. But as to why Oden chose Miami I don't think they got it right. The real truth is Oden must have heard about the couch and I aint saying names...

Yeah... but that was Eddy Curry.

Vet's minimum... 15-20 minutes a game... fat ass...

The Heat are doing their part in insuring that oft injured, extremely overpaid centers get an NBA championship ring. It didn't work for Erick Dampier but maybe Oden will get his ring. How pathetic is that?

Oden and Lebron will be the first grand father and father to play together. Two # 1s at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Just a poor man's Andre Drummond. Still a beast regardless.
