Bill Parcells hints at rift with Dolphins GM

07:49 AM ET 08.03 | Jeff Ireland is the Miami Dolphins' general manager because Bill Parcells hand-picked him for the job. But Parcells hinted Friday that the two men no longer speak. "I only know [contract negotiator] Dawn Aponte down there well," Parcells said at a news conference ahead of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "She's the only one that I speak to from time to time, and not very often." Parcells, the Dolphins' former vice president of football operations, did not give a reason for the apparent rift. But during a conference call with national reporters last month, he said he handed over control of the organization to Ireland too soon. "Retrospectively, I don't think it was the right thing because I saw things happen that I would have made every effort to try to avoid," Parcells said then. It is believed that Parcells was referring to owner Steve Ross' failed pursuit of coach Jim Harbaugh while Tony Sparano -- also hired by Parcells -- was still under contract. Ireland joined Ross on the recruiting trip (Harbaugh eventually chose the San Francisco 49ers).

How's your team looking?

I have a feeling they are gonna be sneaky good this season.

Thank goodness i'm too hungover to have much of an opinion.

August 3, 2013  11:10 AM ET

I'm not the least bit hungover and I don't give a flying *** about this non-story either.

Looks like Bill is reading the lunch menu.

Nobody appreciates what I did!!!!

A great coach in his prime but more and more I get the feeling he's nothing but an arrogant prick.

August 3, 2013  01:36 PM ET

I think the writer is blowing some smoke here. It sounds like Parcells has more issues with how Stephen Ross handles his business, namely interviewing Jim Harbaugh while Sporano was still the coach.

I don't think there's a lunch menu he hasn't read.

Anything to take the blame away from himself. Retrospectively, he failed the dolphins and while trying to distance himself from his failure, took the money and ran. There are no excuses. Parcells was in command and when Ross found out this lazy figurehead was really only getting in the way of real progress for his new Dolphins organization, took the reins away and handed them to Ireland... who, by the way... took too much of the heat for Parcell's poor draft performance.

The organization is much better off now. Ross is no idiot. Time will tell, but with this intelligent coaching staff, front office and above all, desire to succeed, Miami is on the up.

Ah, yes. Nothing like sports fans (you, those who can't...and don't) sharing their, um, "opinions" about those who can and do. I see the same thing in the music world (my side of the entertainment fence). The guys on the sidelines who never got beyond playing Mustang Sally at the corner bar yakking about the guys selling out arenas. Same story, different day. Let us know when your Hall of Fame induction is coming up so I can be sure and tune in.

I'm not an accountant but sure can have an opinion on the IRS. I'm not a politician but have an opinion about congress. I'm not a musician but have opinions about what music I like. And I'm not a condescending prick but I have an opinion about your post.

If you're selling me music, it's up to me how I appreciate it. In other words, it's what the customer* wants. It's the collective judgment, of us "unworthy" people, who make you a success, or a... mecca.

But hey, you too are entitled to your opinion. Thank you for opening your mouth and erasing all doubt.

Boards like this exist to have people give their "opinions" as you so smugly put it.

Are you going to blame people for eating at a restaurant too?

Get over yourself you arrogant prick.

Never confuse that which is popular with that which is good.
