09:14 AM ET 08.03 | After a difficult season, Lakers forward/center Pau Gasol is looking forward to a new start this fall with the Lakers sans Dwight Howard. "I understood and understand it was a difficult situation for a lot of people, to make things work," Gasol said Friday in a phone call from Spain. "As difficult as it was at times, now it's behind us and all we can do is focus on the present and what's coming." Coach Mike D'Antoni even benched Gasol for a stretch, hoping to find a way to build a winner around Howard despite Gasol's track record with two NBA titles. "I don't hold grudges. I really don't get stuck in the past," Gasol said. "Things happen for a reason, that's why I always stay in the present. I'm happy with my position now. I'm excited to get started in training camp when the time comes." To be fair, the decision to prioritize Howard over Gasol was a franchise decision -- not just D'Antoni's. D'Antoni recently told local radio that he anticipates Gasol will be a major part of the Lakers' success next season.

Gasol deserves props for not being slighted like most players would have been when they acquired. Gasol needs to show he can still bring it since he is in a cintract year. I expect him to rebound and have a strong season.

I agree, I really like what Pau siad: ""I don't hold grudges. I really don't get stuck in the past, things happen for a reason, that's why I always stay in the present. I'm happy with my position now".

It's not like he's got much of a choice. He's paid handsomely, and he's under contract. I'm tired of all these "props" for being a paid employee etc; Just play dude.

I do agree with D'Antoni about Gasol being a huge part of the Lakers next season but the success part I'm not so sure...

Pau has always been the scapegoat but he has always handled it like a man. He is not about pointing fingers even the fingers are always pointed at him. He has always been a good soldier and always took was given to him...

Now, the idea that Dumbtonie was trying to make Howard the focal point is just plain dumb. Dumbtonie never cared for Howard and he doesn't know or care to use him...

Let's face it. Paul Gasol has not played at a high level for a number of years. Attributing his lack of effort and degradation in skills to Howard's presence is lame. For a player making close to 20 million a year he should be putting up big numbers. He should be getting 20-15-2.

Good for you Pau.

Thanks for your attitude and double Purple/Gold titles.

Pau hasn't been the same since that season where Phil was smacking him in the chest on the sideline. I guess that's also when his teammates were sleeping with his girlfriend.
