We recruited most of these guys as DBs.

After Manziel's faux pas at last month's Manning Passing Academy, I'm surprised to see his name on the watch list for the Manning Award.

I'm sure the Manning Award is decided by committee.
A jackasz is a horse designed by committee.

Given their protocols of selection, A.J. McCarron should be a shoo-in this season.

To his credit he's been the model of consistency and has added elements to his game every year. 'Bamahas become a little more vertical during his tenure and they've recruited some stud WRs so I'm eager to see what is added this year. He's a disciplined decision-maker and his check downs are really good. Good touch on the ball. Great leader. Above all great kid who remained open to great coaching.

Great comment and I agree. IMO, McCarron will make a very good pro QB!!

But ... unless there is an effort of ManzieLohan proportions, Clowney will win the Heisman. ESPiN was pimpin' him before he ever got to SCe. Never underestimate the value of the spin. The spin wins!

I don't think that McCarron will win the Heisman. He is not the type, he is not a "flashy" player, just a solid all around good QB!! IMO, I don't expect Clowney to win the Heisman either!!

I was just riffing about ESPiN!

I have great respect for what the players accomplish on the field ... but I have little respect for ESPiN and how they cover it. They make little effort to report on sports they're not invested in, and they go over the top on with coverage where they're heavily invested. I'm hoping the new Fox Sports 1 will give more realistic balanced coverage but probably not! It's still the media where flashy and new sells!

Ironic that the watch list Doc presents in Post 1 shows only one candidate for the wide open offenses of the Big 12 conference, whereas the defense oriented and run happy SEC has six candidates. The times they are a changin'.

August 4, 2013  04:39 PM ET

Oops...make that five candidates from the SEC.
