No clear QB favorite at USC

07:22 AM ET 08.05 | So, who will it be? Max Wittek took snaps from the first-team center during warmups, was first up when quarterbacks began throwing passes to receivers and again during seven-on-seven drills. Cody Kessler took the first snap with the offense during a pre-workout drill and also for the final full-squad drill. So it went Saturday in USC's initial training camp practice, the third-year sophomores alternating opportunities as Coach Lane Kiffin revealed no obvious sign indicating the front-runner to start the Aug. 29 opener at Hawaii. Wittek, Kessler and freshman Max Browne are competing to replace four-year starter Matt Barkley. "We know what's at stake," Kessler said. The 6-foot-4 Wittek, who started two games last season, has shed about 25 pounds and, at 233 pounds, appears more nimble.

Wittek is more experienced, but Browne is probably the most gifted of the USC QBs.

Thanks. Nice to be here. It's that time of year again.

Kessler: "We know what's at stake."

Of course. Nothing less than LK's job in the Land of Troy.

Kiffin should start Max Browne. He is clearly the most gifted QB USC has ever had.

That's alright, OT will have them straightened out by game time.

I sure hope so!!! Remember the name: "Max Browne"!!! He might not play a big role this year, but he will in the future, that is if he stays healhty. :-)

Kessler had the best spring, he should get the nod. Max Browne is the future.

ICE, I agree. I know you are closer to the action than I am. I seen Browne play in High School, I know he is on a different level now, but the kid is good and is the "future" for USC.

Kiffin should start Browne now and pave the way for Sills in 2015.

You might have a point, but we are not in the USC camp and don't know what's going on.

Easy decision. start the one that was paid the most money.

Sills is no lock for 2015. We offered two other QB's in his class.

ICE has the odds. Unless Kessler has a complete meltdown, he'll start. As the season progresses, the OC may get Browne into certain game situations while riding Kessler for the vast majority of clock time. Alternately, if Kessler stalls & falters, Browne could get the nod. I just don't see Kessler getting lost in his own head, failing to read the field, or forgetting his throwing mechanics.

The only experienced QB from last year Wittek doesn't figure? Hm.
