07:29 AM ET 08.05 | Teams have been making a habit this offseason of extending their players, a list that as of last week added Joe Pavelski and Jay Bouwmeester. Except in New York, where the Rangers have been curiously reluctant to engage in negotiations with Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi, all of whom can go free (alternate meaning) next summer. Understand, it's not as if negotiations with any or all of the Big Three have hit snags. Fact is, Slap Shots has been told, negotiations have yet to even begin with the franchise goaltender, the captain or the first-pair, right-side defenseman. Why? Who knows? General manager Glen Sather's email response to Slaps Shots this week when asked about the status of negotiations was, "We will be talking."

Exact same thread as yesterday so here's my comment from there....

"Don't worry Rags fans Slats will ultimately give them all too much money and too many years."

So it was Slats who negotiated Bettmans last contract....

Will they ever win a Cup with the team in front of him like Richter?

1) He is certainly the best Ranger goalie I ever saw play.
2) not to ound too much like a fan, but I think this team is good enough to win, especially with a goalie like him back there. But (I say this as a recovering Torts fan) the team has to be allowed to play. Nash and Richards ....richards moreso I think...need to start playing as they should, now that they will be "allowed to" Brian Boyle also has to recapture what he had 2 years agothey certainly have the d men to allow it up front...we'll see

I saw Gump Worsley play when he was a Ranger so I have seen most of NY's goalies since then and would agree Henrick is the best. The East just got tougher with the Wings there now. All teams in that Division will have to be better. I caught a Messier interview last week one of the questions asked was he disappointed he didn't get the Ranger coaching job. His answer surprsed me he said he was offered the job but he told Slats to continue the search for the job. I love Messier but I'm not sure that is exactly how it played out.

I met Messier once, and I found him to be a very humble, soft-spoken and genuinely nice guy. perhaps it was one of those..."yeah, I'd love to (have the job) but if you find a real coach, I'm cool with that too.

Agree. Winged Wheel just introduced a whole other dimension to the East.

On the positive side, I now will get to see them on a regular basis.

Mess-- IDK. I dont think he had designs on the coaching position, I think he really wants the business end of it.

I met the younger version of Messier. That was back in the day when he was playing as hard off the ice as he was working on it. He was a great character then and still is. The way I understood it was he wanted the job and when he didn't get it I assumed that was the real reason why he left the Rangers.

They will be a playoff a team in the East. Not sure yet which team they will replace.
Pretty sure he was lobbying for the coaching job. Be it on the coaching side or Mgmt. side I think he wanted a bigger role with the Rangers. No doubt in my mind he will be back in the game sooner then later.

Thing is why can't he start out Asst. Coaching? Gretzky found out you just can't throw yourself in the HC role, I know he was involved with the Olympics, but with his assistants possibly knowing more than him.
