Rangers whiffed on Cruz's suspension

07:18 AM ET 08.06 | On Monday, Nelson Cruz's regular season came to an end by way of MLB suspension. There was some thought that he might appeal the suspension in order to keep playing, but that option always seemed like a reach since he'll become a free agent at the end of this season. ... There was a report earlier [Monday] that the Rangers were stunned by Cruz's decision to accept the suspension. General manager Jon Daniels refuted that report, but he did say the organization thought it could go either way. Honestly, though, it would've been shocking if Cruz had appealed the suspension. He would've compromised his financial future even further. ... If the Rangers failed to add another right-handed bat based on a belief that Cruz was going to fight the suspension, they were being incredibly naive.

Problem was, there was no decent right handed bat available at the trade deadline and certainly not for the prospects they would have had to give up. I don't think they 'whiffed'.

I guess it's a tie! There is just NO way the Rangers knew it would play out the way it did. What athlete puts team ahead of self?

The truth of the matter is, his value has been seriously lowered, if he would have appealed in the long run, he might have increased his value because the team signing might have seen some loyalty in him. Now a Team is going to look at a lousy defensive PED filled hitter, who might loose a step or two because of the down side of the drug.

If the Rangers have no intention of signing Cruz after the season then you can say they whiff. I agree with you Tx the only bat out there at the time was Morse and the old saying is you do not trade within your own division, so that only leaves two opinions Triple A or waiver wire for help.

If the 'price is right' I think they will re-sign him. They certainly will not overspend to sign him as a FA.

......pitching, pitching, pitching.....and the rangers have more than anyone else....

I tend to agree...

He's not going to get top dollar... but he will get a fair offer from the Rangers.
