01:13 PM ET 08.06 | NASCAR driver Tony Stewart would have earned a wildcard spot in the Chase for the Cup if it started today, but it doesn't, and an unfortunate injury could lead to him missing the chase altogether. According to reports, Stewart was racing on a small dirt track in the local circuit when he was caught up in a crash that ended with him suffered a broken leg. Stewart will be out for at least this weekend's race, but you would have to imagine that he will be out much longer and eventually miss the chase.

A sad state of affairs. Thoughts and prayers your way Tony!

If there's a way to make it back, he'll find it.

Agree.......except, sometimes there is no way back........heard on the evening news, that Tony will require a 2nd surgery....if that is the case, then Tony will be missing many races.

I hope he has a good recovery.

They really need to rethink this sprint car racing.........or find a way to make it safer.

- July 29, Stewart was involved in another hold-your-breath wreck at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, where Stewart rolled his sprint car five times. (not injured).

- Memorial Day weekend, Josh Burton, 22, lost his life at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway in a sprint car wreck.

- Then, two weeks later, NASCAR driver Jason Leffler, 27, died from injuries he suffered while racing in a sprint car race at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway.

-now Tony has broken his right leg....a break that sounds like it will need some extended healing time.

Agreed, and I hope so. But from my personal (observational) experiences, when a break involves both the tibia and fibula, it takes a lot of work to get healed from those -- or to be more precise, to be healed properly.

My (uneducated) guess -- he'll be lucky to be racing by the start of 2015.

Sorry, I meant start of 2014. Lost track of what year I'm in! :P

Good luck Tony.....guess I won't be seeing ya at Eldora next month.

Jayski update:

Zippadelli says Tony is expected to be out for several races.

They will be better able to assess timeline after 2nd surgery. (indicates 2nd surgery very soon).
Considering all Tony's "other" racing, Zippy says they are lucky that this is first time dealing with something this serious.

Sponsors are very disappointed. (oh oh....trouble in SHR paradise 2014, 2015?)

Missing NASCAR? Just sit on the side of the road with a beer in your hand and watch the cars go by. Just about the same thing.

Time to give up the sprint car hobby.. God is trying to tell you something.. you might want to take the hint

Obviously you do a lot of sitting by the road watching cars go by

You can add the fact he is 42 and recovery will take longer at that age.

But on the bright side if he has to take a cr@p this Sunday he won't have to wait until he wins the race like a few years ago when he skipped to the winners circle to hit the head.

^^^^
Sorry I probably should have left that incident forgotten.

And that is only in the last month or so.
