07:29 AM ET 08.07 | Tick-tock. Talks to try to get Jared Cowen signed on the dotted line aren't close to finished. Senators assistant GM Tim Murray and Cowen's agent Rick Valette will continue talks this week to try to get the Sens' last remaining restricted free agent signed to a new deal. While there was talk on the weekend, sources say the 22-year-old Cowen and the team aren't close to a deal, and more work is needed in order to get a contract in place before training camp opens Sept. 11. If it's a long-term deal, some believe Cowen's camp would like something close to the seven-year, $27-million deal that defenceman Travis Hamonic signed with the New York Islanders. He makes an average of $3.85 million per year. Ideally, both sides would like to get a deal done as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately for Cowen, he doesn't have the Olympic invite that Hamonic has. Hamonic won't make the team but the invite alone speaks volumes.

Is Cowen any good? I don't know enough about him.

Yes he is and if Sylvester screws this one up he should be sent packing.

He probably doesn't have the Olympic invite because he pretty much didn't play last season.

Injured in the AHL during the lockout. You can hardly blame the kid for that.

After letting one behemoth with budding stardom leave not so long ago, the Sens will never let lightning strike again.

I am very surprised that teams have made no attempt to poach young players with RFA offers (Stepan or Cowen are great examples). Should be a little talk of collusion among NHLPA members... seems GMs made some pacts during the lockout.

I'll never understand why they let Wade Redden walk.

Because he couldn't skate?

Spiny, you are like the most awesome-est batting practice pitcher going. You keep throwing up creampuffs for people to hit out of the ballpark.

Well done!
