Fisher courting QB controversy

07:24 AM ET 08.07 | With the EJ Manuel era now over at Florida State, the race to replace him is no done deal. Not according to coach Jimbo Fisher. Not by a long shot. It sure seemed like the Seminoles had found their next starting quarterback when Jameis Winston wowed the Florida State faithful at the school's annual Garnet and Gold spring game in April. ... Not so fast. On Tuesday, as Florida State prepared to open camp, Fisher pumped the brakes on Winston's coronation. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker was hampered by an ankle injury during the spring, but he will have every opportunity to win the starting job at FSU this fall. The competition is still wide open. And with no end in sight. "They'll get equal reps, and they'll split time with the [first team]," Fisher said. "But they'll get all equal reps. You'll know [the starter] when you know."

Wonder if Jimbo sees something he doesn't like about Winston, or sees something he DOES like about Coker.

In either case, they're both Gator bait.

Winston was supposed to be all world. I guess he has not lived up to that billing.

Just coaching BS.

IF they are splitting reps, that means there is a QB battle. A young QB needs all the reps they can get.

Seriously, I am guessing he's using this to 1) find his #1, while 2) getting his #2 plenty of good quality reps and 3) building some suspense and intrigue with the fan base.

But I betcha 3/4 of the fanbase can't spell "intrigue". BWAHAHAHAHAAA!!

I bet this mirrors UF's QB issue last year.

Intrigue with QBs does not seem to work out for the best. Just looking at UF's passing attack last year. I bet Driskel could have used more spring and fall practice reps.

Definitely has a downside.

But if you don't have complete confidence in who's #1, gotta get that answer, somehow, some way, even if it costs you some upside.

Maybe the dreaded "struggling to grasp the offense" mental problem?

Jordan Reed at QB... Trey Burton would call the plays and make adjustments as a H-Back.

I think Winston is the guy, but Jimbo is creating a competition to prevent Coker from transferring. As a redshirt sophomore, Coker is the oldest QB on the roster. If Jimbo gave the job to Winston in the summer, Coker would have transferred, leaving Winston, Sean Maguire (both redshirt freshman), and John Franklin (true freshman) on the roster.

Then he will transfer next year. Once again UF did do the same thing last year.

I really think that held back the development of the starter. Especially how Muschamp did not make the decision literally in the first game.

That's an interesting take on the situation. "Transfer prevention" -- kinda makes sense. It's a sad commentary on how prevalent transferring has become, though.

Also UF's WR did not help Driskel be creating separation.

FSU WR are a more talented and experienced group that last year's UF WR.
