Did Wayne Gretzky trade hurt hockey in Canada?

10:28 AM ET 08.11 | Twenty years have gone by since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. The Wayne Gretzky trade and the Gary Bettman vision for expansion -- putting teams in non-traditional hockey markets -- has made the National Hockey League bigger, richer, but not necessarily better. There should be a second team in Toronto. There should be a team in Quebec City. There should be Stanley Cup parades in Canada. From 1976 to the time of the Gretzky deal, there were nine Canadian Cup winners in 13 seasons, and two other finalists. Since the deal, there were three champions (all within the first five years) and none since.

It could be worse. They could make him ghost write a book for the articulate Miss Pinch.

The answer is he only hurt it in Arizona.

It's nothing like the Babe Ruth jinx...yet.

I still don't understand why Canadian papers care if a Canadian team wins a cup. Like it doesn't matter what team. 4 Canadian teams made the playoffs, 2 made the Conference Finals, one made the finals. Who cares. This is just strange.

National pride.

It's Canada's game.

If the Toronto Sun wants Canadian teams to win the Stanley Cup, they should push for the Canadian teams to hire General Managers who put together better clubs.

That being said, I am not sure about two teams in Toronto. If fans would support another team, great, it would be a natural rivalry. If not, the failure would be awkward to say the least. I agree Quebec City should have a team.

Bingo!

I don't agree about 2 teams in Toronto........another somewhere else in Ontario, maybe.......Hamilton, London, maybe.......but not necessary.......another one in Quebec, ok, but also not necessary.

The trade certainly helped expand hockey interest south, but it took many years for many people, including Wayne's dad, to stop being angry at Pocklington.
