Make-or-break for Niners' Asomugha

07:10 AM ET 08.12 | Nnamdi Asomugha has traveled a long way to wind up back in the Bay Area. Ten years after Asomugha entered the league trying to prove he was worthy of being a No. 1 draft pick in Oakland, he's now trying to prove worthy of being on the roster of a Super Bowl contender. ... [Asomugha] knows nothing is given, not even his spot on the 53-man roster. He vows to earn it. He'll have to. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio doesn't give out gifts. Fangio on Aug. 2 implied Asomugha might not make the roster, saying "the jury is still out." Four days later, perhaps realizing his initial comments were catnip for the curious, Fangio backed off. "He's done fine," Fangio said. "I just said from day one, from the day we signed him until now, that he's got to earn the right to make this team."

He's going to run one of those fade routes.

Fade into oblivion.

That's just coach talk for "get off your lazy over paid duff and get to work".

Isn't he the guy who wanted a career in Hollywood? Maybe it's time for him to take a run at acting...he's been "acting" like he's a top DB for a while now.

If so , he leaves the game a very rich man with a nice pension coming his way.

Yeah, it's hardly the end of the world if this guy washes out.

Old story...new day.

A few years in Philly did this to him? He was pretty decent when he was with Oakland.

Fangio should know that under Harbaugh no players job is secure. Fangio does have a soft spot for Carlos Rogers, who before the flrst OTA was questionable to make the team for 2 reasons 1) his poor play in 2012 2) His large salary.

Asomugha is getting paid minimum wages, he is a mentor to the younger DB's and like he said: He has a chip on his shoulder to redeem himself of what happened in Philly. And Most of all Win a Super Bowl ring.

He just married actress Kerry Washington about a month ago.

The 49ers believe in competition and may the best man win. Terrell Brown, Nnambi Asomugha, Carlos Rogers, Eric Wright, and Perrish Cox are all fighting for the 3 main CB jobs. I think every one of them is in a contract year, so the competition will be fierce.

From advancing age to the waning of his mental commitment to football to his increasing failure to be physical off the line to a (sudden?) lack of athleticism - and throw in a practice injury that had him thinking too much about concussions, folks have been trying to grasp the "problem" with Nnamdi since his departure from the Raiders. Some say the Eagles were the problem: the clubhouse, the poor play of the safeties, Castillo's bad schemes. Maybe Nnamdi just wasn't that good to begin with. Size and speed alone do not a HOF corner make at all necessarily. The Niners aren't risking much to take on a "name" CB who might help a secondary that was shredded by Flacco and Co. last February.

He is strickly a man to man cover corner... It's when you ask him to do the other stuff like play zone when he starts to struggle and mess up.

Who is this guy's agent ? Because he sure had us fooled a few years ago.

August 12, 2013  10:56 AM ET

Make it happen Nnamdi.....

Asomugha might not make the roster, saying "the jury is still out." How apropos for football:)

Asamougha is better than what he showed in Philly.

Put him in man to man, he's pretty good. Put him in Tampa Two and notsomuch.
