Kicking the Giants into Super Bowl XLII turned out to be very lucrative for Lawrence Tynes. The hero of the NFC Championship Game, who booted the game-winning 47-yarder in overtime after missing two previous attempts to win it, Tynes was close to agreeing to terms Monday on a five-year, $7 million contract, an NFL source confirmed.

The fairy tales ended in the Super Bowl, he will be back to his erratic ways next season, just making a lot more money to do it!

February 12, 2008  07:24 AM ET

85% completion is erratic? The problems people associate with him came primarily early in the season....it is no wonder you as a Cowboys fan would have a low opinion of him because you saw him when the long snapping team was still working the kinks out. One of the bad kicks in GB was off a bad snap.

5 years is a long time for a kickers contract but he does a good job on kickoffs and like I said 85% completion isn't that bad. A whole whopping 1% more than the Cowboys kicker. Guess Folk is erratic too.

and away we go !

he cheated on that kick against the cowboys

February 12, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Nick Folk can actually kick 50+ yard field goals. They don't even let Tymes attempt those. And Tymes is a career 79% kicker. That 85% boosted his % this year. So yes, he is erratic. And if he would have missed that FG in Green Bay he wouldn't have a job today.

shh jj
his name is Tynes.

February 12, 2008  07:55 AM ET

Thank you.

Of course he wouldn't have a job but he did hit it.

The Giants rarely had a shot at 50+ field goals this year. I can't recall one time where it was a 50 yarder and they punted.

February 12, 2008  08:00 AM ET

So because he makes that one kick he's no longer erratic? Honestly, it doesn't even matter. He won the game, won the Super Bowl, and got a new contract. Not a bad month for him I guess.

February 12, 2008  08:09 AM ET

No because he hit 85% while kicking in Giants stadium that I don't think he is erratic. It isn't exactly a kicker-friendly stadium.

and away we go !

he cheated on that kick against the cowboys

KP-patron saint of lost causes

How do you cheat on a kick?

February 12, 2008  08:51 AM ET

if they hadn't of beat the packers, he'd be looking for a new job next season. instead, he salvages the game, and gets paid.

"The fairy tales ended in the Super Bowl "

The "fairy tale" ended in the nfc divisional round .
The reality will continue through the 2008 playoffs!

On tynes...The reality is 7 mil over 5yrs means nothing to the cap, even if he's cut prior to this season....an insurance contract in case no better option arrises.

February 12, 2008  09:32 AM ET

i am getting a Tynes tatoo and have purchased Tyree's sperm for our next offspring.
Now that is bleeding blue. (sorry - but kicker stories bore me)

February 12, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Hey, I bet on fourth-and-thirteen, Coughlin will send him in.

At that price, you cannot go wrong..Give him credit, in the bitter cold , after missing twice, he hit that field goal..that takes courage...His kick offs were decent. Good for him, he was on the hot seat all year...

February 12, 2008  02:40 PM ET

You win the Grand Prize aka the Lombardi Trophy everyone gets paid!

Just shows that the Giants realized that Eli wasn't the only one who grew up during the play offs...name me kickers who miss two FG's that could win a game to come back in OT to kick the game winner that sends you to the SB???

missing 1 FG during a playoff game screws with your mind none the less 2...so he composed himself showed maturity and kicked one helluva kick to put the Giants in the Super Bowl...also can someone please tell me what the winning point difference of the Super Bowl was???

The man deserved to get paid...he will only get better.
