Not enough snaps in Michigan backfield

07:23 AM ET 08.12 | Forgive Fred Jackson for his walk down Memory Lane. "This is identical to early on (at Michigan) when I had (Tyrone) Wheatley, (Tim) Biakabatuka, Ricky Powers, Jesse Johnson and Eddie Davis," U-M's longtime running backs coach said. ... [Fitz Toussaint's] primary practice competition has been Justice Hayes, who [Brady Hoke] cited as having a strong spring, summer and fall, Drake Johnson and Thomas Rawls, none who could unseat Toussaint last year but apparently have made great strides. Freshman De'Veon Smith is also in that mix, but still learning the offense. The expected wild card, the one with the ideal blend of power and speed, is highly-rated true freshman Derrick Green. Unfortunately for Jackson, Green remains limited to conditioning as he returns from an undisclosed injury.

Actually, a day without a Johnny "Cash" Manziel thread is even more refreshing.

Any thoughts, G80, on Fred Beckmann's announced retirement?

Very true, a day without johney doing something dumb, like most 19-21 will do, is a good day for both the readers and him.

Its Frank Beckmann, but I am fine with him retirement, its a "new age" in college football, with the realignment, bowl tie-ins, playoffs, etc. So sometimes you need to get some new blood in the system. Its good to have some tradition but I dont think announcers, equipment manager, and athletic public relations (also both announce their's retirement) really matter with the product on the field. I understand they all were with a program for a while, but its not like a recruit is going to come or go based on the announcer, PR, or equip. manager.

The only complaint I have so far with college football is the fact that PSU, MSU, OSU, and MICH are all going to be in one div. I would much rather had them divide the divisions into north and south so that we could actually get a good b1g conf. championship match up. WIS and NEB will 9 out of 10 years be the west champ. At least it will put a little more meaning into "THE GAME" since most likely it will mean who goes to the championship game. Especially since the way OSU and Mich have been recuriting like banshees.

Right the #1 OVERALL RB from 2012 and they're probably going to land the #1 RB from Louisiana this year..................you're sharp as a marble.

Keeping TSUN and tOSU in the same division was deliberate in that the B1G didn't want to see The Game played back-to-back as a possible rematch in the CCG. It retains a little of the old tradition of the Big Ten. Think Hoke and Meyer will go mano a mano like the Woody and Bo Show?

^^^^ THIS

I agree, it would be nice if they balanced out the conference by adding a perennial powerhouse like Duke to Michigan's division so that teams like Indiana would get to know the feeling of waxing an opponent.

#1 overall RB in 2012 was Yeldon. On the field results back that up.

Leonard Fournette is going to Michigan???

Are you talking about Bama?

Derrick Green was #1 in 2012

I was kidding about Fournette, I can't see him not going with Miles @ LSU, but Jabrill Peppers is doing some recruiting on his own and I believe has swayed the #1 DE DaShawn Hand into giving Michigan SERIOUS consideration, so who knows? He's been getting the the ear of a lot of studs so who knows what will come of it?

I'm pretty sure from Hollis's comments during the process of realigning the divisions, that MSU wanted to be in the west, with a protected cross-over with UofM. Brandon didn't want to have a schedule where you guys played us every year, but tOSU and Penn State only played us some years. That's how we all ended up in the east.

Looks like Green was 2013. Depends on which site you use. Personally I like 247 and their composite.

So long as Cutcliffe remains the HC, Duke would own the "I" states and be a threat to TSUN.

You know my stance on college football. I will not explain it again simply because you're soft between the ears.

Dateline 11/30/13: As the fans filed out of the Big House, Michigan said goodbye to football until 2014. A season which began with such promise collapsed into a calamity of last minute losses and dashed dreams. The post mortem? Weakness in the backfield.

How (you ask) could a team so loaded with running backs receive such an obituary for the 2013 season? Well, it seems too many backs spoiled the execution. Not one of Michigan's powerful stable of ponies got enough reps to find a rhythm. Poor reads, poor hand-off mechanics, poor receipt of tosses, and poor receptions coming out of the backfield ended drive after drive after drive for the Wolverines.

The comedy of errors in the backfield which began the season became a nightmare of errors by the heart if it. Nobody doubts that in the agonizing grind to the end, the mistakes were mental. Surely, the fine young men who return next year will overcome the horrors of this lost year and be ready to make amends. Surely, a coaching staff with such combined wisdom and experience will pick the starters in preseason practices and give these young men the chance to develop and shine on the field for the Maize and Blue. Until then, "Wait 'til next year" are the bitter herbs on which they must sup.
