Why Jameis Winston's star is rising too quickly

07:26 AM ET 08.12 | From his emergence on the field to his 'Manziel disease' comment off it, the legend of Jameis Winston grows. A star is emerging at Florida State. Whether or not this was always the plan or merely a serendipitous development, [Winston] walked into a room full of reporters Sunday morning and further cemented his status as one of college football's next big things. ... But as Winston's charisma continued to win people over, the uncomfortable truth permeating Florida State's was that his emergence is coming too early. There is friction just beneath the surface and Florida State could find itself in a difficult position depending on how the coming weeks play out. Coach Jimbo Fisher insists the quarterback competition remains open and that [Jacob Coker] will have every shot to win it.

First off, in Jameis' defense, it was a reporter that coined the phrase "Manziel Disease" at yesterday's FSU Media Day. This portion of the article surprisingly hits the nail on the head. Without a doubt, there is a buzz about him amongst all FSU fans. Charismatic off the field, a leader (even as a freshman) on both the baseball and football teams, displaying his athleticism all spring in both sports, etc.

That being said, a lot of Noles fans (myself included) need to dial back the expectations. It's his job to lose and nothing is guaranteed as Coker has shown that he has the talent to start. If Jameis does win the job, people need to remember that he's still a redshirt freshman QB and is going to make mistakes. He's human. He has a lot of talent to work with, but Jimbo isn't going to go crazy with the offense. Bringing back 4 starters on the OL and 2 junior RB's means he's not going to throw the ball 30+ times a game unless the Noles fall behind. I know he's a talented guy, but he needs reasonable expectations for this year.

The kid has proven nothing; he had good performance in a spring game against his own players, who gives a sh-t! He runs his yap like he's already won two titles. See you in November!

What was he "running his yap" about? Nothing about the Heisman and I never saw anything about National Title aspirations. The only thing he said is he isn't afraid of UM and UF. That's the confidence we need to see. If any QB ever said "Sorry guys, I don't think we'll do well against our two biggest rivals. Those teams are scary.", he'd be run out of town.

If Morris said he was nervous about coming to Tallahassee this year (I know, senior vs. redshirt freshman), you'd call for his head.

The true Florida state championship is on this year. UF is going on the road for their sceond game to a 1/4 filled stadium and most of those will be in Orange and Blue.

He had to mention Manziel in order to get noticed? Pathetic.

Or, you know, the media asked him about Manziel and not the other way around. Maybe next time he should dodge the question because only attention seekers talk about Johnny Football.

<Pops corn, settles into easy chair>

This has the makings of a very entertaining thread today. No Sunshine State pleasantries here.

It really is. I'll be surprised to find a quarterback who ISN'T asked about Manziel.

Florida State championship > PAC whatever championship during the BCS era

I was talking about the Gators not leaving the State of Florida for an OOC game since they lost to Syracuse in 1991. You were talking about the "true Florida state championship", not the BCS true championship!!! :-)

We have had this "discussion" before. UF consistently is in the top 10 by most SOS rankings. With the quality of OOC teams in the state of Florida why leave the state?

FGCU is still undefeated. ;)

So you are saying that Miami has been a quality team the last 7 years??? Florida State has been fairly good the last two years!! Why wouldn't you as a Gatror fan, want them to play a good OOC game out of state??

To paraphrase
"I don't care about your big push!
I don't have any Seminole friends!"

The Gators consider playing at Mizzou their out-of-state OOC game. They don't respect Mizzou as an SEC member just yet.

Final ex-Vanderbilt player turns himself into cops. Wow, where is this "alleged" rape case going??

LOL, yeah Mizzou is not "respected as an SEC (football) member" quite yet, but the same can be said about Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Oh crap, did I just open a can of worms!!! :-)
