The knock on Clowney

07:12 AM ET 08.15 | While it seems Jadeveon Clowney, who sat out practice earlier this week, will play on Aug. 29, some wonder what sort of effort the world will see. There comes a time in every NFL prospect's life when, no matter how gifted he is, the process of evaluation moves from listing his qualities to finding his faults. Like most everything else in Jadeveon Clowney's life, that process has been accelerated. ... Where's the wart? Consistency, say some. That's a fair critique, South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said. "JD doesn't play hard all the time, and he knows that. I tell him all the time," Ward said. "He plays hard when he needs to. The great thing about him is when he has to make a play, he will make it. But I want him to make those plays all the time."

Not many I would dare say....not as much as they could in CFB.

So you are telling me the JD that we have seen has not been giving it his all. Oh lord help the poor offensive linemen when he does go 100%.

no, its that he plays 50% on 80% of the plays, so that he gets his headlines with the 20% that he gives 100%.

Got it?

Many, many NFL D-players play inconsistently, especially as they get older. The smarter ones use that tendency to rope-a-dope O-line opposites to make plays at crucial times, just like the O does the D with certain plays. Most D-players do not play 100% all time in any case and it's really a wonder that many "stars" haven't been called on that before. Maybe it's not as easy to spot as Randy Moss' plays off.

Clowney is obviously great but only one good ACL tear away from it all ending. Enjoy it now.

Damn good point. Didn't we hear all this hype about Te'o this time last year???

Very few people will play a 1000 out of a 1000 plays at top speed. His 60% is probably better than most CFB D-linemen's 100%.

Good point, but I think that when he gets to the pros, he might want to play 800 out of 1,000 plays at 100%.

Hopefully Clowney will have a lot less drama in his life than Te'o did.
