Jets' plan in shambles

07:02 AM ET 08.15 | The best-laid plans are just that -- plans, and plans go awry. [Rookie general manager John Idzik] was the point man pushing a two-man quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez (after his failed David Garrard signing) for the better part of three months. The inexperienced GM ruined his own master plan in the span of four days. Smith, who suffered a sprained ankle in the preseason opener last Friday night, may miss Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium. Rex Ryan admitted on Wednesday that Smith's right ankle isn't "close to 100% right now," an indictment of the team's decision makers who put him on the practice field beginning Sunday. ... Ryan shares some of the blame for playing Smith, who was "brutal" during his four-interception practice on Wednesday.

Best headline in a long, long time. Makes me happy.

I thought shambles was the Jets usual plan

It's one of their plays.

"Red 42, Red 42. Shambles. Buttfumble. Hut!"

Oh this is just TOO EASY!! Retaining Rexy for another season was just the start of the plan going into the sh&tter, if there really was any plan.

C'mon guys..Jets are in rebuilding mode.. But haven't they been doing that since 1969?

August 15, 2013  08:03 AM ET

The key to their plan was going 1-15 and then drafting Johnny Football. He seems like such a perfect fit.

August 15, 2013  08:04 AM ET

Idzik has a massive mess here... and didn't help himself by drafting Smith.

Is it just a plan when you're in a constant state of shambles? Seems to me the AJets have mastered shambles they need to move forward (or backward depending on how ya look at it) and try to achieve complete dissaray. ;^)

nothing new-we need a QB- and it appears that the 2nd round pick rook isn't ready yet if smith wasn't on the roster- we'd be in the same boatI'm fine with a rook tossing picks in early campI'm NOT fine with our 5th year QB doing so.

WOW! Sanchez has been in the league 5 years already. It seems like only yesterday he was taking the Jets to AFC Championship games....

August 15, 2013  08:41 AM ET

The headline is a little over the top. a lot actually. Coughlin did not start Eli his rookie year. Kurt Warner was the starter but bad teams find their way and he became a starter around mid season. He struggled for sure, but Smith will be the starter at some point I suspect. this year.

The only way the plan is in shambles is if Smith never gets it right.

August 15, 2013  08:44 AM ET

this seems to be the jets standard operating procedure.

He already seems like a head case! Good luck with that!

August 15, 2013  08:46 AM ET

Why blame the GM for a QB injury? The coaching staff put Smith back on the field too soon after the injury.
Question for Jets fans: do you think McElroy has developed enough to be a decent starter? I only saw a couple of series but he didn't look too bad.

That is what would have kept me from drafting him. But people can grow up, sometimes, and they must have done their homework. You would think.

The Jets just can't seem to get out of their own way. The enemy is within.

They'll really be in rebuilding mode in January when they're looking for a new HC.

What's he been doing since then? Time for a change of scenery, and I think he'll be ready for it.
