Tolzien playing for his career ... again

07:06 AM ET 08.16 | While the No. 1 quarterback is set in San Francisco, Scott Tolzien has quite a bit riding on the No. 2 race that also includes Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels. Each of the four 49ers quarterbacks should get an opportunity to play Friday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said this week. That means the competition continues for Tolzien, who has been battling for his professional football life since arriving on the scene with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted rookie in 2011. ... Tolzien is unlike the other quarterbacks on the roster in one sense: He does not have experience running the read option. He has always been a pocket passer. Kaepernick, McCoy and Daniels (shown, right) all thrived in college with their legs, as well as their arms.

Hard to top a B.J.

Harbaugh was a pocket passer, too. But that might not matter, his current system seems to be working very well.

Never knew he had a career to begin with. Undrafted 2011, cut 2011, signed by SanFran for scout team work. Not sure that is called a career, extended try out perhaps?

Uhh, who cares.

Probably not bad money for a kid just out of college, though. And, if he's smart, he's learning a bit about coaching so he can get a junior college gig somewhere.

He already beat the odds. All is gravy now.

Career Highlights - after being cut by the Chargers out of college... Special Thanks to wikipedia for providing the details:

The San Francisco 49ers claimed Tolzien off waivers on September 4, 2011 to be the third string quarterback behind starter Alex Smith and backup Colin Kaepernick. Tolzien played a major role in the 49ers' practice during the 2011 playoffs, helping Alex Smith prepare for the NFC Championship game against the New York Giants. He was retained by San Francisco after the conclusion of the 2012 preseason, and will remain the backup quarterback behind Kaepernick.

It is about the retirement system. He has no illusions, but he is not eligible for a pension someday without two more years in the league..

Tolzien was the starting QB at Wisconsin and his backup was Russell Wilson the starting QB of Seattle. The offensive coordinator of Wisconsin is the brother of 49er QB coach Geep Chryst. Scott Tolzien is close friends of the Chryst family.

It is surprising that Tolzien is even on the team. Last season Josh Johnson ( Harbaughs QB at San Diego) was paid $300,000.00 to try out for the backup QB position in 2012. Alex Smith was once again was guaranteed the #1 job by Harbaugh, both Kaepernick and Johnson outperformed Tolzien and Smith in preseason yet Tolzien stayed and Johnson was cut.

This year the 49ers traded to bring in Colt McCoy as the #2 pretty much bypassing Tolzien. Neither McCoy or Tolzien looked very good in the 1st preseason game and have not really stepped up in practices, I could see why McCoy would have problems, he isn't really familiar with the offense, Tolzien has no excuses because he has been with the team since the arrival of Harbaugh in 2011. B.J. Daniels has been utilized as QB, RB, WR and KR. He is the better athlete of the 3 backups, it will be interesting to see how he does in the preseason game.

I know that Matt Maiocco ( the probable author of this article ) feels that Scott Tolzien is owed the #2 QB position, but he also kept saying all of last season that Kaepernick was light years behind Alex Smith when I argued with him that Kaepernick was better than Smith, and when Kaepernick took over for Smith, it was Matt Maiocco that keep waving the banner for Smiths return, always saying how unfair it was that Smith lost his job due to a concussion. Even when the 49ers entered the playoffs Maiocco kept saying Smith would do better. Although he is supposed to be the 49er insider, I'll bet you anything he is keeping his fingers crossed for Alex Smith and hoping he outperforms Kaepernick.
