10:55 AM ET 08.17 | UCF scored a major victory when an appeal court slashed damages it owes the family of football player Ereck Plancher. The decision, which dropped the payment from $10million to $200,000, could have a sweeping impact on university athletic departments throughout the state and likely will be cited in the pending case against Florida A&M filed by the family of band drum major Robert Champion. Planchers' parents are appealing the ruling. Plancher collapsed following offseason workouts supervised by UCF coach George O'Leary and his staff in March 2008. Plancher's parents filed a wrongful-death lawsuit, arguing UCF Athletics Association staff members failed to follow their own procedures to treat Plancher when he suffered complications from sickle-cell trait. UCFAA countered it did everything possible to save the player's life.
